HP Using Voodoo (No, Not in the Leak Probe)

Not to be outdone by Dell's deal with Alienware (and not to be confused with the Congressional hearing (aka "HP FUD" -- Fear Uncertaincy and Doubt) now going on, Hewlett-Packard plans to buy niche PC manufacturer Voodoo Computers.

Voodoo makes cool looking, high-end PCs (expensive!) that are popular with gamers. We've blogged about them previously -- some hot boxes!

Will be interesting to see how the PC companies (Dell and HP) fare against game-console manufacturers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

Another battle of the titans to enjoy ...

Live from Tokyo: New Xbox 360 HD Games!

It's beginning to look a lot like HD around here, with Microsoft's announcment today at the Tokyo Game Show 2006 that is has a library of 110 HD Xbox 360 games that will be available this holiday season in Japan, including the highly anticipated Blue Dragon.

(Look for a lot of those to be headed our way, too.)

Also, Microsoft is going "old school" with a tribute to “Pac-Man” with the announcement of the first “Pac-Man” World Championship will be held in early 2007 using Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade.

The Xbox 360 games showcased included:

If this isn't enough, read the complete press release on the Microsoft web site.

MTV: Living in a Virtual World

If watching reality TV and playing "reality" video games like all of the permutations of The Sims wasn't enough, MTV plans to launch its new show, Virtual Laguna Beach, on Wednesday.

Not just any old MTV-type show, according to reports (like those in today's New York Times), Virtual Laguna Beach lets you not just watch TV, but live TV.

(Not sure if I really want to ...)

The introduction of Virtual Laguna Beach is apparently the first of three virtual worlds  that MTV plans over the next year as part of an effort to gain back mindshare from such popular Web sites as MySpace and YouTube.

To join in the fun, visit www.vlb.mtv.com and download a piece of software to get started. The first step is designing your avatar — which can look like you or anybody (or thing) you want to be.

(Think many Runescape players will go over to the light side ...?)

Nintendo with Your Happy Meal?

According to a report in Advertising AgeNintendo is teaming with McDonald's to reach new, non-core gamer audiences -- the Happy Meal crowd, tween girls and older folks (this last demographic via hosted "Grandparents Days!)

These efforts, along with a planned new multimedia campaign, are designed to extend the reach of its Nintendo DS beyond the core gamer market.

Will gaining one (or more) audiences, lose the core?

Gamers do know cool when they see it. "I'm lovin' it" -- I just don't know ...

Living in the Virtual World Can Make Kids Smarter?!

This may be hard to believe for some, but online virtual worlds can actually help kids with school and school work.

At least that's what online virtual world Whyville.net is claiming -- with 1.6 million or so children aged 8 to 12 spend time there to learn about math, science and other subjects in a "multiuser virtual environment." (Anybody remembe the three Rs?)

According to a recent CNN report, some educators believe virtual worlds can have a big impact on education, but proponents are having a difficult time overcoming negative perceptions of computer games.

What negative perception?

Rocky RukShuk: Soon To Be on a Screen Near You?

What is old becomes new again -- is this inspired by Stonehenge or other ancient rock formations built by our ancestors?

(Or is there a simpler reason grasshopper?)

Rukshuk, "The Game of Rock Balancing" -- offers a "refreshing departure from the high-tech world of video games dominating the current landscape" and a global ecological theme.

Every Rukshuk rock formation, which players attempt to build by balancing specially crafted game rocks, is named for a natural rock phenomenon somewhere on the planet.

Here's creator Malcom Bisiker's take on it:
“Mother Nature has been building rock formations for a long time. People around the world have also built rock formations for cultural reasons and as landmarks for thousands of years. Rukshuk delivers this age-old idea in the form of an exciting, point-scoring game."

Players race against the clock to build different Rukshuk rock formations by balancing their blindly chosen game rocks. (Scrabble anyone?)

If a formation topples, it must be rebuilt quickly. Points are scored for each rock standing at the end of the allotted time, with bonus points added for the successful use of specific rocks and the completion of the formation. The player with the highest score wins.

Bisiker's inspiration? Rukshuk was conceived in 1998 in a cafe (are you sure this doesn't mean "pub"?) in London, England, where he watched as a group of friends nearby attempted to stack sugar cubes. He wondered what was so addictive about the balancing act, tried it himself and was instantly hooked.

(See how you can turn your idle time into inspiration?)

(All the news that's fit to print about video games, gaming, etc. ... and that can really be quite a lot of news!)

What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?

Try this on for size gamers!

The Satoricode Code Project is among other things an attempt to provide a constructive virtual world outlet for Internet users to settle differences that may lead to violence in the real world. Players enter a three-dimensional virtual world and control a soldier in a video game war. They can battle one on one with another player or they can recruit others to join their army. Which ever player or team has the highest score at the end of the battle wins.

(Something for the UN to consider?)

Another important part of the project will channel the energies of users to see what topics are important to them. What topics are they willing to fight for?

Visitors can post ideas that they are passionate about and create an army of fellow Internet users who go into a virtual war in order to score points for their idea. Which ever army scores the most points wins.

Here's a look inside the mind of the creator:

“This project is about creating a new form of communication for our emotional energies and connecting those energies with people from all over the world in one interplanetary exercise in anger management, conflict resolution and understanding which things are important enough for us to fight for.

"Let me explain what I mean. We all have a conscious and a subconscious mind. Our conscious mind is connected to our ability to speak so when something in this part of our mind upsets us we are able to talk about it and use reason to solve our problems. The subconscious mind on the other hand behaves a bit differently. This part of our mind is not connected with our ability to speak, but instead it is connected to our emotions.

"Because our emotions filter the way that we perceive our world, unresolved issues can negatively impact the way we respond to our environment, making us do things we are likely to regret. We need outlets for these energies so that we can mitigate the negative effect they have on our lives, and so that we can bring them to the surface of our minds where our conscious mind can interrupt them and find long-term solutions to our problem. The goal of this web site is to help to facilitate this process."

Try it and let me know if you feel better ...

Comeback for Atari?

How about the reports that Atari is attempting to get back into that top-of-mind gamers spot? (Remember when Atari was the only game in town? My how things have changed ...)

Some buzz about the launch of its Test Drive Unlimited driving simulation game, which apparently takes a radical move in in multiplayer online games designed for consoles, rather than computers.

It allows literally thousands of gamers to play within the same game world simultaneously. According to the company, the seamless online connection offers unlimited new challenges, opponents and competitions as well as monthly additions of vehicles, aftermarket parts, clothes and apparel; and I'm sure plenty of other stuff.

Anybody want to share any fond Atari memories?

According to a recent report from BusinessWeek Magazine, the online gaming market will reach  $13 billion by 2011. This would be a 400% increase from the $3.4 billion market last year.

For All of You RuneScape Fans …

RuneScape launched its latest game engine upgrade today! Here's the details from www.runescape.com:

"This is the biggest upgrade to the underlying engine which runs the game since we launched the new 3D engine two years ago, and I've been working on it for literally months. However this time the changes are more under the hood, which means (if everything goes to plan) you shouldn't actually notice a huge amount of difference!

"The game engine upgrades this time are focused on allowing us to make the game bigger and on providing support for all sorts of features we want to do in future updates. These are the sort of changes that you won't see immediately, but do allow us to do all sorts of things in the future which we've been dying to do, but couldn't previously.

"However, there will still be quite a few improvements that you will see immediately, such as:

"But of course it mainly consists of underlying changes to let us do more exciting stuff in upcoming updates ..."

EA @ E3

Say what you want, Electronic Arts (EA) is still one of the top producers of video games (been so for a long time, too) for every platform.

EA is using E3, which opens today in LA (and runs through May 12) to showcase the following games:

EA officials say The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 will bring players into the heart of Middle-earth to live the battles seen in the blockbuster New Line Cinema films and classic J.R.R. Tolkien literary fiction.

NCAA Football 07 on the Xbox 360™ features detailed graphics relaying the authenticity of the stadiums, mascots and marching bands of college football.

From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes “SPORE for the PC, an epic journey that takes players from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space.

PlayStation 3 at $499 & Up?

Sony and Microsoft used to compete head to head in video gaming consoles, but with Sony announcing PlayStation 3 prices at $499 (basic) and $599 (souped up), they now seem to be at a major competitive disadvantage with Microsoft on a key issue -- price.  Xbox 360 is at $299 and $399.

And where does the new Nintendo box fit into all of this?

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo battle over undecided gamers

According to an IGN survey, 14% are unsure about their next next-gen videogame console purchase. Microsoft has a headstart over both Sony and Nintendo, however the Sony Playstation 3 sports a 36% allegiance versus Microsoft XBox 360's 28%. Having trouble deciding - I say just buy one of each. Here's the IGN survey synopsis...
Console Makers Must Court PlayStation 2-Owner Fans of "Lost" who Listen to Gorillaz on their MP3 Players and Eat at Taco Bell, According to IGN May 1, 2006 - Brisbane, Calif. - In the race to be the leading next-generation console, any of the three manufacturers can take the prize, according to results of a recent study by IGN Entertainment's GamerMetrics and IGN Research Solutions. The "IGN Research: Next-Gen Console Allegiance" survey shows that while 36% of the IGN.com audience claims loyalty to the PlayStation 3, the spread is narrow enough for the undecided 14% to make the critical difference.  28% say they have the strongest allegiance to the Xbox 360, while 22% pledge their faithfulness to the Nintendo Wii.

IGN's survey also profiled and analyzed the undecided gamer by lifestyle choices, media consumption habits, favorite brands and game genre preferences to understand what Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony need to consider as they strategize to emerge as the victor. One noteworthy quality about the undecided gamers is the fact that they prefer role-playing games (RPGs), while the favorite genre of the entire survey sample is Action.  This, coupled with the fact that 79% currently own a PlayStation 2 - traditionally considered the top console for players of RPGs - might give Sony the edge over their competitors. Favorite brands of the undecided gamers include Google, Apple, Coke, Taco Bell, Target and Dell.  The group's affinity for youth-focused brands that offer quality products for reasonable prices might favor Nintendo's next-gen approach.

Gamers undecided about their next-gen purchases seem to spend more time and money consuming their entertainment at home.  More have sizable DVD collections than go out to the movies (67% own at least 20 DVDs, while only 50% went to see a movie within the 30 days before taking the survey), and many (47%) plan to buy an HDTV.  They won't be using it to watch MTV, however.  Only 17% watch "Punk'd," while an even smaller 10% watch "The Real World."  Undecided gamers will instead be watching their choice television drama, "Lost," as will those allied with the Xbox 360, a positive sign for Microsoft.  PlayStation 3 enthusiasts by and large prefer "24," while Nintendo Wii devotees favor "Smallville."

Other findings about the undecided gamer include:
• 70% own a handheld gaming device (their preferred handheld being the PSP)
• 90% regularly download music from the internet; 60% own MP3 players
• Favorite band is Gorillaz (which is true also for those most excited about  the Nintendo Wii.  Xbox 360 fans prefer Nirvana, while those awaiting the   PlayStation 3 most enjoy Eminem.)

IGN's research suggests that Microsoft must lose its reputation as being first and foremost for the First-Person Shooter crowd to appeal to a broader market. Nintendo must appeal to the consumer who can not afford to spend close to $500 on a new console and Sony must reach out to their loyalists by promoting backwards capability with the PlayStation 2 and offering functionality with the PSP. IGN Entertainment's network of videogame-related properties which includes IGN.com, GameSpy, FilePlanet, TeamXbox, Direct2Drive and others is the web's number one videogame information destination and attracts one of the largest concentrated audiences of young males on the Internet. GamerMetrics data is based on more than 30 million users' activity on these, and on a pool of more than half a million users volunteering which titles they own, want and are evaluating. IGN's "Next-Gen Console Allegiance" survey is available at no charge to members of the press, industry analysts and clients of IGN.

Working with Sony Pictures, they have launched the Da Vinci Code Quest, an online puzzle game that challenges players with a dizzying 12,358 puzzles and no simple solutions. The Da Vinci Code: The Movie is distributed by Sony Pictures and is based, of course, on the mega-selling novel by Dan Brown.

According to a post on the Official Google Blog by Google software engineer/for-time world puzzle champion Wei-Hwa Huang, the puzzle game’s many twists and turns are “designed to honor both a fanatical puzzler’s sheer love of a mental challenge and the labyrinthine spirit of The Da Vinci Code itself.”

Huang developed the puzzles while Google and Sony developed the overall user experience. Those who successfully navigate the Da Vinci Quest will win one of several prizes, including the grand prize of a tour of Paris, London, Rome and New York, and a hefty grab bag of Sony electronics that includes a Bravia HDTV and a Vaio laptop. For 24 days, the Da Vinci Code Quest will feature one new puzzle or riddle per day spanning several levels of difficulty. The puzzles are organized into six categories, including Symbol, which is a version of the popular Su Doku number game.

Around the time of The Da Vinci Code’s original publishing, Random House released two "WebQuests" similar in concept to the current Quest, but they are less-elaborate online puzzle games than the ones Sony and Google are rolling out now. After the questions end on May 11, the first 10,000 players to correctly solve their daily puzzles will receive a replica of the "cryptex" –- a cylindrical decoder device that played a key role in Dan Brown’s story — they will move on to the final round. The finalists will then face off against five more puzzlers, with the last question being asked on May 19, which is, appropriately enough, the release date of the movie.

If you win, don't forget who turned you on the contest ...
