MTV: Living in a Virtual World

If watching reality TV and playing "reality" video games like all of the permutations of The Sims wasn't enough, MTV plans to launch its new show, Virtual Laguna Beach, on Wednesday.

Not just any old MTV-type show, according to reports (like those in today's New York Times), Virtual Laguna Beach lets you not just watch TV, but live TV.

(Not sure if I really want to ...)

The introduction of Virtual Laguna Beach is apparently the first of three virtual worlds  that MTV plans over the next year as part of an effort to gain back mindshare from such popular Web sites as MySpace and YouTube.

To join in the fun, visit www.vlb.mtv.com and download a piece of software to get started. The first step is designing your avatar — which can look like you or anybody (or thing) you want to be.

(Think many Runescape players will go over to the light side ...?)

Mac vs. Windows: Considering a Switch?

With all of the excitement around Apple and little (or at least not so much) around Microsoft computer products and gadgets, many may be thinking of switching from a PC to a Mac.

(Not too many going the other way ...)

Well, if that's the case, check out the fine article in yesterday's New York Times' "Circuits" section.

Anybody what to counter any of those observations?

Old School Old Tube

The one thing we don't think about too much in the world of gadgets is that gadgets do come and go -- some very fast and some very slow.

Piece in the New York Times got me into this nostalgic state; article is on the soon to be disappearing cathode ray tube from TV sets in America and around the world, too.

(Cut-away photograph courtesy of a fun place to visit ---www.sciencemuseum.org.uk.)

Now some of you may not remember, but I am sure many of you do remember that big old thing sticking out from beyond the TV set in the living room; that was the most visible part of the cathode ray tube.

(CRT to those into initials.)

CRTs also made our computer monitors look so massive; amazing with technology can do!)

Easy to see this near death coming with the explosion and steady sales of flat-panel TVs, which obviously take up less space on a desktop (and look cooler -- you know cooler does count in gadgets.)

Any thoughts on other gadgets soon to be on their way out ...

Cold Chips Go Very Fast!

Researchers at IBM and the Georgia Institute of Technology recently announced that they have broken the speed record for silicon-based chips with a semiconductor that operates 250 times faster than chips commonly used today. (New York Times reports.)

(No, not the chips on the left.)

The achievement has been called a major step in the evolution of computer semiconductor technology that could eventually lead to faster networks and more powerful electronics at lower prices. Developments typically find their way into commercial products in 12 to 24 months.

The researchers, using a cryogenic test station, achieved the speed milestone by "freezing" the chip to 451 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, using liquid helium. That temperature, normally found only in outer space, is just nine degrees above absolute zero, or the temperature at which all movement is thought to cease.

Dan Olds, a principal at the Gabriel Consulting Group, a technology consulting firm in Portland, OR, said the development was significant because it showed that the chip industry had not yet reached its upper limits.

The research group included students from Georgia Tech and Korea University in South Korea as well as researchers from IBM Microelectronics.

The results are reported in this month's issue of the IEEE Electron Device Letters. (Sure everyone is familiar with that pub ...)

(Andrew on Jul 6, 2006 6:27 PM) Ok, that is cool - however I don't remember seeing a 'liquid helium' section at Best Buy. Or am I missing the big picture?

(Randy Savicky on Jul 7, 2006 9:51 AM) Not yet at least ...

Sony’s New Gadget-Dispensing Vending Machines

Have you heard about Sony selling electronic products in automated kiosks?

Yes indeed! Reminds me of the amusement park game (or diner lobby game) where you put your buck into the machine and you get to operate a giant claw that tries to pick up a stuffed animal or some other goodie.

(Please, if you have ever won that this game, let me know. I am sure to be impressed.)

Actually, what Sony is doing is installing branded kiosks in three shopping malls this week that will allowing purchasers to see the selection of electronic items behind glass walls, touch the screen to read about product information or watch movie trailers and then make a purchase delivered by a robotic arm.

According to the New York Times, Sony hopes the vending machine-like kiosks, called "robotic stores," will help boost sales by offering consumers a way to combine the immediate gratification of a store purchase with the ease of buying products online.

Only time will tell ...

(Oh, and if you come across one of these things, please let me know.)

Gadget Makers Go Green

Nice big article in yesterday's New York Times about how electronics makers like HP and Dell (among many others) are suddenly waking up and going "green."

Seems this drive for "more environmentally conscious" behavior is really motivated by another type of green -- as in money. As these companies recycle products at their huge recycling plants, they are pulling out precious metals in greater quantities than are currently being pulled out of the ground by mining companies. (We're talking gold and silver here as well as others.)

To me, it's a win-win situation -- guess it is pretty easy to be green after all.

Is the Phone of the Future FuturePhone?

Leave it to David Pogue in his New York Times "Circuits" column to explain the business model for a company named FuturePhone, which offers totally (and I mean totally) free international phone calls to more than 50 countries without sign-up, fees or surrendering your name or address.

(Yes, you may want to read that over again to make sure you understand it completely.)

How do they do that you ask? And more importantly, is it for me?

Take a click here to find out.

Libya & the $100 Laptop

While Libya may not be the best place in the world to call home, it certainly looks a lot better to the 1.2 million children that will get $100 laptops courtesy of the Libyan government.

While we here at home are faced with many, many more expensive PC choices, the Libyan kids will join the PC-powered generation.  (John Markoff's fine reporting can be read here.)

Not too take anything away from spreading wealth and accessibility to make our world a truly smaller, closer, friendlier and better place, but wouldn't it be nice if there was program like this in the U.S. where our kids could get $100 laptops, too?

How about this paragraph from the New York Times article:

It is possible ... that Libya will become the first nation in the world where all school-age children are connected to the Internet through educational computers. “The U.S. and Singapore are not even close.”

Megapixels Don’t Matter

Always good to read what David Pogue of the New York Times has to say about technology, gadgets and the folks that inhabit our wonderful worlds.

So not surprising then to read his digital camera ditty today about whether megapixels really matter.

(An endless debate that harkens back to the very dawn of the digital camera age.)

They do, don't they?

Well, to steal one of his lines, not to give away the punchline, click here.

iPod vs. iTunes: The Guessing Game

While the iPod and iTunes are inevitably linked (they're both Apple products, right? and they are linked on the Apple web site), interesting New York Times article today on the ratio between the number of songs downloaded from iTunes as compared to the number of iPods sold.

Anyone care to play the guessing game?

What's your answer to the question? Is it:

A: 1 to 1

B: 5 to 1

C: 10 to 1

D: 20 to 1
