A Bluetooth killer or an enhancer? Seems Nokia's announcement today about its Wibree technology may be either one.
A unique radio technology extending local connectivity to small devices, Wibree is an open industry initiative developed by Nokia Research Center.
It complements other local connectivity technologies, consuming only a fraction of the power compared to other radio technologies, therfore enabling smaller and less costly solutions.
Wibree is the first open technology offering connectivity between mobile devices or Personal Computers and small, button cell battery power devices, such as watches, wireless keyboards, toys and sports sensors.
With a goal of having the new technology available as soon as possible, Nokia is defining the Wibree interoperability specification together with a group of companies representing semiconductor manufacturers, device vendors and qualification service providers. These include Broadcom Corporation, CSR, Epson and Nordic Semiconductor as well as Suunto and Taiyo Yuden.
Sounds pretty cool ...

In what is a sad end to a noble experiment, Mobile ESPN is closing its mobile phone venture for a simple reason -- not enough customers were interested.
Now, I'm all for getting sports update on my cell phone or even watching a game (or game clips or highlights), but what did they do to make this atractive to customers?
Yes, we are a sports-crazed nation, but not that sports-crazed I guess.
The "if you build it, he will come" mantra really didn't work -- and it usually doesn't work any more in consumer technology.
Plans call for hooking up via -- am sure plenty will be interested ...

Mobile phones to go, go Moto! Indeed!
Not to be outdone by the likes of other gadgets companies that hve gone the kiosk route, Motorola now plans to sell cell phones and accessories in vending machines.
Motorola has begun selling phones and accessories through "Instantmoto" vending machines at such well-trafficked locations as airports and department stores, including San Francisco International Airport and Macy's on State Street in Chicago. The first stage of the roll-out will be completed by November.
According to sources like the Associated Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Chicago Tribune, the machines will stock nearly 12 phones and 18 accessories.
While this is very interesting and makes it even easier to increase mobility, who will be the first company to put a cell phone in a cereal box?

Apple's upcoming iPod-like phone (aka "iPhone") will be available exclusively from Cingular when it becomes available next year.
Check out more of the story here.

JAJAH now enables most mobile phones to make free global calls. JAJAH will announce on Tuesday their new service which enables consumers to make free or low-cost long distance international calls directly from their cell phone. This extends
their previous "free calling", to the mobile phone realm, which was previously only available via a computer browser.
The JAJAH Mobile Suite will allow virtually any mobile phone to make JAJAH calls. JAJAH is starting with Symbian and Java-based J2ME phones and soon will enable text messaging and smart-phone/browser solutions. Between all of these methods, just about any cell phone can use JAJAH. Even
Blackberries now work with JAJAH, as I recently reported.
JAJAH mobile is seamlessly integrated into the JAJAH desktop solution allowing consumers to manage their account directly on the JAJAH web site. To use the service, you first need a JAJAH account. To take advantage of JAJAH’s Free Global Calling Plan, it only applies when both call participants are registered JAJAH users. In countries where free phone calls are not available, or if someone is calling a non-JAJAH member, calls are then subject to JAJAH's rates, usually less than 3 cents a minute.
According to Jajah's Frederik Hermann, here's how it works. "In short, you go to the Jajah site, look to see if your phone is currently supported - the first phones supported are Symbian based, like
Nokia N70 and Java based such as the Nokia 6630 (J2ME). We are adding phones everyday and the software is done for many phones. If your phone is supported, you pull down a small plugin. Your phone will then know that when you dial an international number, it will send the call through the Jajah "network" (you can change theses preferences if you wish and make only some calls, or all calls, go through Jajah). Regardless, you just dial the number and Jajah makes the call. Thats it. The back end is all integrated with the Jajah system (billing, call history etc.). Basically its the same price structure as with a regular Jajah call - free to other Jajah users etc."
Update: 9:32am TuesdayIt's now official -
check out the announcement

Disappointed that the Apple mobile phone wasn't the big news this week from "Showtime," but now reports are in that the "iPhone" may be coming early next year.
It now seems more likely that thisi whiz bang gadget may be announced at the Macworld shindig in early January, if "significant technical hurdles" can be overcome.
Makes you wonder about all the wonderful creativity and technology that gets jammed into our gadgets, doesn't it?
Smaller, better, faster ...
(And don't think you'll see Motorola cell phones too much on the Apple site in the future once their own phone is out there ...)

Want to make free phone calls from your Blackberry? Well, there is now a piece of software called
BBCalls (Blackberry Calls) that when used in conjunction with
Jajah, grants you your "free phone calling wish".
Jajah announced back in June free phone-to-phone calls to almost anywhere. The JAJAH Free Global Calling Plan applies to both landline and mobile phones to many of the most-called places in the world.
JAHJAH uses a unique method of initiating the call. You go to a website, enter in your phone number and the number you wish to dial and JAHJAH dials both legs of the call and connects the two. Free calls from your Blackberry? Sweeet...

Of course we are all very excited about all of Apple's announcements yesterday, like iTunes 7.0, its movie downloads and ways to get them from the computer to the TV, but where's the Apple cell phone?
If you remember "I want my MTV" from the early days of the music video channel, then it's time to pick up a new slogan -- "I want my Apple cell phone."
(Or is it "I want my iPhone"?).

Really like the fact that my favorite newsaper, the New York Times, has just launched a web site optimized for mobile phone users. They even released a press release about it.
The site, http://mobile.nytimes.com, provides access to news and information from NYTimes.com via mobile devices including Web-enabled phones and PDAs.
Readers can scan headlines on the section-fronts or read the complete articles from Latest News, World, Business, Sports, Arts and all other top-level sections of the Web site.
Spent some time playing around with it already via my Treo 650 (Sprint service), and let me tell you the downloads are much faster than via the regular NY Times web site! How much faster -- very much faster!
The NYTimes.com mobile site can be activated for free by typing http://mobile.nytimes.com into the Web browser of a Web-enabled phone or PDA.
Get all the news that's fit to download!

According to a published report today on Yahoo! via Reuters, Nokia is abandoning its long-standing practice of giving its cell phones numbers instead of names.
Seems that it's influenced by Motorola with all of its snazzy phone names.
Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?
Or would the RazR be so cool as the Motorola CP356 or would LG Chocolate excite everyone's taste buds if it was the LG-907 CH?
On the other hand, where would James Bond be without 007?

The upcoming Blackberry Pearl looks like a gorgeous smart phone, but it's sure to drive the corporate types crazy -- no wheel, multimedia capabilities, decidedly non-Blackberry look and feel.
I also can't help thinking the name has something to do with Pirates of the Caribbean -- the Black Pearl, you know?
Perhaps there's an upcoming Blackberry/Disney tie-in or maybe Johnny Depp is involved in some way? You know, "This is Captain Jack Sparrow for the Blackberry Pearl ..."

The plot thickens ...
Very interesting blog today on Macnn about Apple filing a patent application for a multi-functional hand-held device.
Today, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published Apple's patent application, entitled "Multi-functional hand-held device," which was originally filed in March.
Interesting (as in very interesting), telephony was covered in that patent.
As I blogged yesterday, in light of Apple's "Showtime" media event next week, does this peel away another layer of intrigue about a possible Apple cell phone? Or does it just add to the intrigue?
And what exactly will an Apple mobile phone look like? Would be cool if it had "the wheel" like the Nano.

Don't suppose it's in response to all of the recent chatter about Apple's September 12 special meeting/announcement and, separately, Apple's cell phone plans.

TréoCiel is a nifty little program dedicated to the Treo 650 mobile phone that gives me localized weather forecasts in a chart report, with the abiliy to update forecasts when and where needed!
The local weather charts give a whole week in a single view, and you can also receive detailed hourly forecasts for the next days -- temperatures, precipitation probabilities and wind speed.
All of the information is presented on a single scrollable chart (see illustration at left).
It's easy to use, easy to read and there when you need it -- what more could you want from a weather forecast!

Celebrities Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are in a well-known feud that now has entered one of my favorite realms, namely VoIP. According to an
InfoWorld article, (which
Asterisk VoIP News reminded me about), it is alleged that Paris Hilton used a fake Caller ID seller called
SpoofCard.com to hack into voicemail accounts on an un-named mobile phone network. Spoofcard.com has suspended her account along with more than 50 others.
Apparently, many mobile phone companies, including
Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile simply use Caller ID to identify voicemail users without requiring passwords. Have they not heard of
CallerID spoofing? Sheesh, they can't even detect that their own customer's mobile phone is dialing into their network and are instead relying on unreliable CallerID info? How pathetic is that? So all you need is a celebrities' mobile phone number and a spoofing CallerID service and then you can access their voicemail.
Interestingly enough, SpoofCard.com leverages the open-source
Asterisk IP-PBX to sell US$10, 60-minute calling cards that let users call a toll-free number and type in whatever Caller ID number they want their call to display. Amazing what sort of sexy applications you can do with an Asterisk box. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go check out
Nerd Vittles site. He has some interesting Asterisk projects.
Last month the New York Post reported that someone had stolen the password to Lohan's BlackBerry and sent her friends "disgusting and very mean messages that everyone thought were coming from Lindsay." Lohan's representatives hinted that Paris Hilton may have been behind it. What's this world coming to when celebrity divas can hack into other people's phones or computers? Hackers used to be an elite group, now it appears anybody can be a hacker. Of course, the
real hackers call people that use well-known exploits or use easy hacking tools "script kiddies" and other not-so-flattering nicknames.
Well Lindsay, if you're looking to get some revenge with Paris, you may be interested in attending
Internet Telephony Conference & Expo just 2 months away. Asterisk, the CallerID spoofing enabler will be there, along with hundreds of other VoIP companies. Not to mention all the VoIP geeks and VoIP hackers that will be attending that I am sure will be more than willing to help you get even with Miss Hilton. I'm sure there will be someone there that can help you hack into
Paris Hilton's Motorola Gold RAZR or any of her other communications devices.
Not that I'm advocating any sort of criminal behavior or anything. There's nothing wrong with a little tit-for-tat game between two famous Hollywood divas, right? Just some simple pranks. No harm no foul I always say. And if it escalates to an all out cat fight, well, I'm sure people would pay good money to see that on Pay-Per-View - or simply download it on YouTube.com.

MINO Wireless, announced its new mobile application for making inexpensive international calls designed for Symbian OS phones. Symbian OS supported mobile phone, such as Nokia, Sony Ericcson, and
Motorola can call any phone worldwide at rates starting from 2.2 cents per minute using MINO.
Considering the popularity of these mobile phone brands and how expensive international calls are using your mobile phone, the ability to make inexpensive VoIP calls to PSTN numbers using your mobile phone has a huge convenience factor.
MINO began offering its service in early 2006 and has signed up over 90,000 users in more than 50 countries.

Palm users have been clamoring for VoIP on their Palm devices for quite some time. I've mentioned VoIP on Palm (
including the Treo) in the past.
mobiVoIP was the first to offer VoIP on a Palm device. However, mobiVoIP only works with their VoIP service plan. Many Palm users simply want a SIP softphone client that works with
any SIP-based termination service provider. I also
wrote about Talkplus, but they don't support SIP either and they too use their own phone service plan.
Well, today,
Hampton Software Limited announced the release of a new Palm VoIP product called Articulation for PalmOS, that supports the SIP standard and therefore works with any VoIP service provider that supports the SIP standard. I should mention that it only works with Palm OS 5. Alas, the software doesn't yet work on the Treo 700p mobile phone, but should work on the Treo 650. It is connectivity-agnostic supporting WiFi, Bluetooth, EVDO, and EDGE/GPRS Internet connectivity.
Screenshot of Articulation for PalmOS

It isn't the prettiest interface in the world, but hey, if I can get my SIP on, I'm a happy man!
Features:- Ability to make PSTN calls with your PDA
- Select the SIP VoIP provider of your choice
- Lookup phone numbers direct from you contacts
- Touch-tones (DTMF) for 'phone menus'
- Supports WiFi, Bluetooth and EVDO connections
- Call timer
- Silence suppression (only transmit your voice)
- Echo cancellation for 'speakerphone' use
Technical Features:- Secure account authentication with SIP MD5 Authentication
- Supports GSM and G711 codecs (GSM is suited to low bandwidth connections)
- NAT support through RFC 3581 and ability to fix ports for symmetric NATs
- Symmetric RTP support
- Low latency
- Low memory usage
Good stuff! You can
download and try it out for free. Still wish it supported the Treo 700p though.

Can't wait to see this one in production units!
Fascinating article in online verson of PC Magazine yesterday about the phone that has no keys. Yes, that's right -- a touchscreen instead of a keypad (dial pad -- hey, how about a rotary dialer like in the '60s?).
According to the piece, the phone, known as the Onyx, is a touch pad prototype of what developers Synaptics and Pilotfish call a "mobile phone concept," meaning this actual phone will probably never hit the market. You see, it's more of a general suggestion for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to develop similar phones using this technology.
But let's ask ourselves, why not? Why not a touchscreen? Is that concept that far-fetched? It would certainly get the early adopters all up a lather, won't it?
Anybody have any thoughts in this area?

According to recent poll published in the Los Angeles Times, young people aren't that crazy about mobile TV.
(Do you think maybe the screen size has something to do with it?)
The poll indicates that this important group may not be embracing mobile video at the rate that many in the entertainment industry assume.
Just about 50% of young adults and 40% of teenagers say they have no interest in watching TV on computers, cell phones or iPods.

VoiceOne Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of VoIP, Inc.
announced today that it has added Text Messaging (Mobile SMS) functionality to its just-released beta version of
Click4Me.Net. This enables a Web-click calling service that utilizes VoIP technology for free phone-to-phone calling. Click4Me.Net is available for testing on VoiceOne's Virtual Lab at
http://Labs.VoiceOne.com -- an open forum for users to preview, test free of charge, and provide feedback on new IP communications services developed by VoiceOne.
You can connect to a registered Click4Me.Net member by texting "CALL + the member's username" to the Click4Me SMS address and the caller will be automatically connected to the Click4Me member of their choice, free of charge.
More importantly, registered Click4Me members can make free calls to any number by simply texting "CALL + telephone number" to the Click4Me SMS address. In addition, registered Click4Me.Net members also receive FREE 411 (Directory Assistance) from any cell phone by simply texting "CALL 411" or just "411" to the Click4Me SMS address. Similar to my Sprint 411 directory assistance (and probably most cell carriers these days), the information provided by Directory Assistance can be sent to the caller via SMS Text and saved for later reference.
Features for registered members of the service now include: SMS Text messaging to users, an online Inbox allowing people to leave messages for one another on the Click4Me.Net website, email and SMS text notifications of missed calls or new messages, and many more expanded and new features.
VoIP, Inc. CTO Shawn Lewis said, "Adding Text Messaging to Cick4Me.Net opens up numerous opportunities for Click4Me members and the people they communicate with. With this new technology, Text Messaging is no longer limited to sending notes to other cell phone users but can be used to instantly make calls to people and services for free."
In addition to cell phone calls, Click4Me technology can be integrated into emails, web pages, web advertisements and more using an HTML call me button. Anyone who clicks a Click4Me hyperlink will be automatically connected by phone to the owner, free of charge.

Here's the study I've been waiting for.
According to a recent PC World/IDB News Service report, feature-rich phones do not drive sales. (Really?)
The study, by J.D. Power and Associates (they of the manmy car satisfaction surveys) showed that U.S. consumers are more interested in the price and design of their mobile phone rather than its advanced features.
(And probably don't intend to use those advanced features, either.)
Here's another useful fact from the survey: Almost 30% of respondents said they selected a particular phone because it was free (the most powerful four-letter word in the English language).
(And what's wrong with a free phone -- haven't we all gone that route?)
Finally, let's not pick on Nokia ...

Well why not, you may ask?
Accrding to an article from 2-pop eNews, Toyota will be spending more than $10 million to create and promote a comedy series designed specifically for multimedia mobile phones!
(Yes indeed, that is an "m" as in million -- remember when feature films from major motion picture studios cost that much? Probably not ...)
Designed to push the 2007 Camry, this is claimed to be "the first branded entertainment series created for the video-phone medium."
The series, called "The Pool" debuts today and is accessible to 1 million users of Sprint/Nextel video-enabled phones. Each episode is two-minutes long, and 10 episodes are planned.
In what is also believed to be a first, Toyota is also buying spots on broadcast and cable TV (including Fox, ABC and BET) that showcase the new Camry as well as promote the mobile phone comedy series. The ads and the series share some of the same cast members.
Check it out and let me know it Toyota is spending its money wisely ...
(Let's see $10 million for 10 episodes equals $1 million per episode; each episode is two minutes so the cost is $500,000/minute -- I thought only NBA basketball players worked at that level ...)

Another titanic struggle is in the making -- this time in the digital convergence of music and the cell phone.
While we all wait for Apple's mobile phone announcement, the established mobile phone companies are staking out their ground in the mobile music market.
We already know about Verizon Wireless and V Cast (a service provider goes mobile music) and now we have Nokia (a cell phone set manufacturer) countering with its purchase of Loudeye, which has a digital music catalogue of 1.5 million tracks.
(The price you ask? $60 million.)
The deal will give Nokia content it can offer customers with music-enabled mobile phones. "People should be able to access all the music they want, anywhere, anytime and at a reasonable cost," Nokia EVP Anssi Vanjoki said, according to the BBC.
Here's some more verbiage from the "official press release":
"Music is a key experience for Nokia and Nokia Nseries multimedia computers and we want to be able to offer the best fully integrated mobile music experience to our customers. Loudeye brings a number of key assets to Nokia, including a great team of people, a substantial content catalogue and a robust service platform that will help us to achieve this objective," said Vanjoki. "People should be able to access all the music they want, anywhere, anytime and at a reasonable cost. With this acquisition, we aim to deliver that vision and a comprehensive music experience to Nokia device owners during 2007."
Love that "vision" thing ...

(Keep working at that music ...)
