Seems like everyone and his brother is developing VoIP extensions for Firefox. I
wrote about Zoep which adds a
VoIP extension to Firefox. It appears that Zoep's website is no longer available, so that project may have been killed.
Openwengo is yet another VoIP player offering a VoIP extension to Firefox. Today, I was given a
heads-up by Luca Filigheddu that
AbbeyNetLabs, a VoIP service provider has just released VoIP extensions for Firefox and Thunderbird that runs on both
Mac and
Linux. (A
Windows version of their Firefox VoIP extension is already out.) The software is called AbbeyPhone and it is SIP-compliant.

With all of the excitement around Apple and little (or at least not so much) around Microsoft computer products and gadgets, many may be thinking of switching from a PC to a Mac.
(Not too many going the other way ...)
Well, if that's the case, check out the fine article in yesterday's New York Times' "Circuits" section.
Anybody what to counter any of those observations?

It's
official! Skype has released a new version (1.5.0.47) of Skype for the Mac. Finally, video is available to Mac users, which up till now must have felt like 2nd class citizens since the Windows version has had video for some time. The video preview of Skype for Mac was released today. They also did some UI enhancements. You can
download the video preview.

Flexity has put a whole new spin (and look!) on one of the essential "back office" elements of personal computing -- the lowly surge protector.
(Is there anything more utilitarian than that?)
Yes, believe it or not, that dull black or white (or even gray) strip of metal, some outlets and an electrical cable with plug has undergone a dramatic transformation.
(Dare I say almost of Cinderella proportions?)
Take a look at the award-winning PowerSquid surge protector in the photo (the Surge 3000-Calamari edition); have you ever seen anything like it? (Except maybe in the water ...)
The Surge 3000-Calamari Edition’s graceful cephalopod (that's fancy for "squid") design and stylish blue-on-white highlights really make this squid-like (especially once you feel those "legs"). Obvioiusly it looks cool with Apple Mac products, but even my Dell looks a bit spiffier with this thing.
(Am sure it would do the same for you.)
Oh, and don't think this is all design and no guts; it comes fully loaded with a feature set that includes:
- 3240 Joule rating
- Six flexible outlets
- Two glowing neon tentacles
- Audible alarm
- Tripwire Fail-Safe Circuit
- Flat profile fit 360° rotating swivel plug
- 8 foot cord
- $500,000 limited connected equipment warranty
MSRP: $79.95

All that software development time! yet we have problems already springing up in Microsoft's new Windows Vista!
Today's dilemma is all about speech recognition (more here from the BBC) -- truly a technology that would seem to be embraced by everyone, but still a technology that has not really crossed the chasm into mass market acceptance.
(Thanks to Kurzweil for the image -- it's been some trip from their music synthesizer to what they are doing now!)
Seems a really bad person can now take over your computer via speech, exploiting some weakness or other than wasn't supposed to be there in Vista in the first place -- they spent a lot of time talking about heightened security in the new OS at the NYC kickoff earlier this week, but I guess they forgot to check out a few things ...
Anyway, with many people sitting on the fence about upgrading their Windows XP platform -- or even considering buying a Mac instead, do we sense a bit of sales disappointment on its way back to Redmond?
Time, as always, will tell ...

Skype for Mac 2.5, as
I previously mentioned back in November, has now gone into public release and can
now be downloaded
This from their PR rep...
As you know, the beta version of this beautiful piece of software has been available since mid-November. Since then,
Skype has worked hard at ironing out the beta wrinkles and is pleased to release a public version into the wild. Skype has even added a nifty little birthday reminder feature, to help you impress your Skype contacts (and secure an invitation to the party).
Skype for Mac 2.5 features the ability to send SMS messages to any mobile phone in the world, bringing friends, family and colleagues yet another step closer. Also, Mac users can now use Skype to hold conference calls with up to nine other people. Calls can be made to Skype contacts for free and to landlines and mobiles for a small fee, via SkypeOut. So, whether your contacts are in one city or scattered around the world, you can now get together to share a laugh or hatch the next killer business idea without hassle.
Of course, Skype for Mac 2.5 also does free one-on-one video calls (assuming users have a broadband Internet connection).
Reminder: Today is the final day for Skype users in the U.S. and Canada to subscribe to the Skype Unlimited Calling plan for the introductory rate of $14.95 ($17.50 Cdn) for 12 months of unlimited SkypeOut calls to landline or mobile phone numbers in the U.S. or Canada… the price goes up tomorrow to the regular rate of $29.95 ($35 Cdn) for the same 12 months of unlimited SkypeOut calls.
