7 million -- that's right. That's what Sony's looking at with the latest news on a GLOBAL notebook battery recall.
We've got Apple, we've got Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo (IBM) all facing problems with Sony's batteries in their notebook computers.
I'd be worrying even if my notebook battery was part of this massive recall.
This seems to be one of those problems like spinach and E.coli that that just goes from bad to worse and beyond ...
... Is there more bad news on the way?

Holy flaming laptops Batman!
Crazy stuff just keeps on happening in the saga of explodiing notebook computers. Now we have Lenovo pledging today that public safety "will be the company's first priority" following an incident in which a Lenovo ThinkPad T43 laptop (with a Sony battery; any surprise there?) caught fire at Los Angeles International Airport recently. That's the culprit pictured at right.
(Now that's scary!)
Now Lenovo engineers are working around the clock at laboratories in Japan and Raleigh, N.C., to determine the cause of the fire. Seems no other laptops have met a similar fate, but makes you wonder if the laptop you have at home or in the office or on the train or on a plane with you may suddenly go crazy on you ...
Interestingly, the "fiery" T43 used the same Sony battery cells that were at the center of a recall of nearly 6 million Dell and Apple laptops earlier this year, but the battery pack has a different design than those of Apple and Dell. Lenovo's design is aimed at shutting down the system before it gets to the point of extreme overheating (always a good idea, I say!).
Computer Reseller News (or CRN to its fans) had some good coverage of this latest string of bad news for anyone who likes to be mobile and computing.

It's not easy being green, but gadget companies do have a sense of "eco-friendliness," according to Greenpeace, which has recently rated CE companies in its Green Electronics Guide.
Apparently Nokia's decision to distance itself from PVC resulted in high marks in the Guide, while Lenovo, which bought IBM's PC business, scored the lowest in the survey, although the computer maker defends its environmental record.
According to the company: "Lenovo meets or exceeds applicable environmental regulations globally, and we don't believe Greenpeace's ranking accurately reflects Lenovo's environmental record," according to a company statement.

With all of the noise about Dell's exploding batteries and increasing in-flight security precautions, isn't it about time that battery manufacturers got their act together to make better batteries?
Well, it doesn't take along ...
According to the always interesting AppleInsider, leading notebook makers Apple, Dell, and Lenovo will be holding a summit meeting next month to begin development of standards for the manufacture of lithium ion batteries for portable and handheld electronics.
You see, these companies are part of the OEM Critical Components Committee of the IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industries -- an organization of 2,400 companies which represent all facets of the electronic interconnection industry, including design, printed circuit board manufacturing and electronics assembly.
Apparently the Committee had identified lithium ion batteries as the next product for standardization, but is going to accelerate its activities because of all of the recent (bad) news.

Maybe it's the intense heat (hot as blazes!), but seems to be a drop in gadget use on the train this morning.
(I thought everyone was goin' mobile!)
Last time, seems that just about half the commuters had some sort of gadget that they were using to pass the time (mobile phone, iPod or other MP3 player, notebook computer, Blackberry), but today that percent dropped to less than 1 in 10 (that 10% -- but let's not rush back to school quite yet).
Today, we had a couple of Dell notebooks (one IBM ThinkPad -- or was it Lenovo?), an iPod, Blackberry and Treo -- and that's about it.
Let's see if gadget usage increases in the fall, when it should be cooler ...

You know, gadgets don't have to look cool to be cool, but it certainly helps. (Exhibit #1 please: the iPod).
Well, if you love design and all things gadgets (and Beyond -- remember that from seeing Click! recently?), then the recent issue of Business Week that featured "The Best Product Design of 2006" is must reading.
According the article, design teams from Asia nabbed a quarter of this year's gold awards, up from 8 percent in 2005. What's more, the bar of excellence is moving ever higher; design has become strategic, the very core of their efforts to differentiate what they make and do.
Take a look at the 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEAs), which is sponsored by BusinessWeek and judged independently by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Here's an excerpt from the article:
What were the key surprises this year? The strong showing by Asia is clearly one of the most striking trends. Panasonic won six awards, twice as many as the next winner and far more than any U.S. or European corporation. China’s Lenovo Group computer maker took two golds, the most of any company. Samsung Group won a gold and two silvers and still leads all global corporations, including Apple Computer, for the most idea wins over the past five years.
Wha'ts really interested is actually seeing all of these neat product designs -- you will not believe how cool some of them are! (And even for what might be consider "uncool" products.)
Read all about it at www.businessweek.com.

The computer printer market has been pretty much HP's for such a long time now it's hard to believe there's much competition (but don't tell Lexmark, Epson or Canon that ...)
Now, in what could have seismic implications in this pretty staid market, Lenovo is planning to make an entrance (and we mean major, as in major entrance) into the printer market.
According to Lyra Research, Lenovo has a vision for a Chinese consortium of printer and supplies makers. Such a Chinese consortium, operating under the protection of the Chinese government, could have a major impact on foreign printer makers’ sales in the domestic Chinese market.
If Lenovo succeeds in creating a global competitor, the vast printer markets in India and other emerging nations may be up for grabs.
(And how about the good old U.S. of A.?)
Larry Jamieson, director of Lyra's Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service, said, "Companies such as Canon, Epson and HP stand to lose significant market share rapidly if Lenovo's strategy is realized. By realigning and leveraging existing infrastructure from numerous domestic printer makers, Lenovo's consortium could realize major gains in the Chinese market and will be poised, essentially, to take on the world's markets."
Isn't it always something ...
