It's
official,
Yahoo! Messenger and
Microsoft Live Messenger now interoperate! As of today, the limited beta is no more and it's fully available to all users. That's right, starting today the combined community approaching 350 million user accounts (arguably the world’s largest IM community) can take advantage of Yahoo! Messenger interop with Windows Live Messenger. Woohoo!

Here are some interesting stats that resulted in a recent poll commissioned by Yahoo! and Windows Live which was conducted by Harris Interactive:
Some IM Users Are Willing to Forego Their Guilty Pleasures for (IM) Inter-Connectivity Feature:
- 29% said they’d be willing to give up watching American Idol
- 16% said they’d give up ice cream for one month
- 15% are willing to give up their morning cup of coffee
- 15% said they’d give up their morning paper
Some other interesting findings:
One in four IM users surveyed said that being able to use one IM service to connect with friends on other IM services is the next great thing since the creation of the cell phone.
57% of the IM users surveyed have a friend or family member on a different IM service.
More than one-third (35%) of students (over the age of 18) use more than one IM service.
Hat tip to
yodel.yahoo.com:
Today I woke up, logged onto Yahoo! Messenger, and pinged my friend Blake Irving, head of Microsoft’s Windows Live Platform Group, to applaud him and his team. Congratulations are definitely in order, as today marks a true milestone in Internet history. For the first time ever, interoperability (a.k.a. interop) between consumer instant messaging (IM) services is possible.
In July, Microsoft and Yahoo! introduced interop on a limited basis and received an overwhelming response. In just two months more than 90 million messages were sent and received across our networks — a level of usage that is a dream for us Internet geeks.

Google Talk
launched a major release that includes voicemail, file transfer capabilities and it shows what music track you are playing in your client. Just make sure to stop playing Barry Manilow
before you call your friends.
Google is one of the simplest "no frills" IM/softphone client you will find - which is
why some love it and some hate it. You can get the update
here and you can read more about it on the

Andy had the
goods yesterday on Sixapart's Live Journal and
Gizmo Project in a deal that would enable one of the largest blogging community to be able to IM & VoIP each other. Well, today, it's official.
The co-branded “Gizmo Project for LJ Talk” software will enable LiveJournal friends to call each other for free, send instant messages and see each other's online presence (available, away or offline). Some nice features include free “Call me” and “IM” buttons on journal pages to initiate calls and instant messages from the web, as well as point and click “voice posts", which allows Gizmo Project for LJ Talk users to post audio recordings (podcasts) on their blog. The partnership also stated that Gizmo Project for LJ Talk users will be able to make low-cost PSTN calls in addition to buddy-to-buddy PC calling. Gizmo leverages the SIP standard for outbound dialing.
Six Apart today simultaneously announced it has created an open source Jabber server, a modular, scalable, server that enables others to integrate their services with Jabber and LJ Talk, LiveJournal's new instant messaging and voice service. The new server provides smoothly integrated IM and voice capabilities, and is now available for any company or service provider to use for free.
Google Talk, which is Jabber-based is able to connect to Six Apart's Jabber server. Similarly, Gaim, Adium, iChat, Trillian Pro, and Pandion S, all Jabber-based should be able to connect as well.
Are Skype's proprietary days numbered? They don't use SIP, they don't use Jabber, their video is proprietary, and they don't allow other client's to connect.

Recently, I wrote an article titled
"The Perfect VoiP Softphone and IM client", where I listed my top requirements for the perfect softphone. Indeed, my perfect softphone client was much more than your typical softphone so I offered an alternative name - "unified communications client". For instance, one really cool feature in my "wishlist" is "
Streaming of my personal video and audio files to my buddies. Think Slingbox or Orb Networks."
Basically, my proposed feature would allow you to remotely access your home entertainment system and view live TV, change channels, or even view pre-recorded content. Heck, most softphones already do audio via VoIP and video for videoconferencing calls, so it's not much of a technical hurdle to add video streaming support from a TV tuner card or other video source. Place-shifting TV content is a fast growing phenomenon among not just techies and gadget freaks but the Average Joe with a TiVo box in their home. If this can be extended to software, in particular VoIP software, the potential to build "buzz", ramp up very quickly, and to compete with the likes of
Skype is there. The problem today is that all VoIP clients are a dime-a-dozen; they're all the same, with the same features, i.e. SIP standard, video, IM built-in, free calling promotions, blah blah blah. See
The VoIP Clone Wars Have Begun... for more proof. Something uinique such as remote TV access -- access to your remote PC's multimedia content could be a key differentiator to go up against the likes of Skype.
Home entertainment and mobile entertainment are two very fast growing industries. Just look at the video iPod, Sony PSP gaming system, and many home theater setups with 5.1 surround sound and expensive plasma displays. With customers spending fortunes on their multimedia content and hardware, customers are clamoring for easy access to their personal multimedia content - it's one reason why the iPod is so successful. Now just image if you could have a single software client that does it all - IM, VoIP, unified address book (IM & VoIP), videoconferencing, access to your multimedia collection, including MP3s, pictures. AVIs, DiVX, Quicktime, etc. Why run 5 clients with 5 separate buddy lists, each with its own advantages/disadvantages when you can simply run one application that does it all?
Well, there isn't a software client today that "does it all", but SightSpeed comes
damn close.

ICQ, an AOL-owned company, now has PC-to-Phone (PC-to-PSTN) functionality with the release of ICQ 5.1. If you recall,
I ranted about how ICQ 5.0 only had half-duplex push-to-talk PC-to-PC calling. No word whether the new version has full-duplex PC-to-PC VoIP calling, however. The ICQ Phone service utilizes deltathree's iConnectHere for terminating to the PSTN and for backoffice (billing, call records) support. Yet another "me too" IM product - "We do VoIP/PSTN calling. Look at us!"

With more softphones on the market than you can shake a stick at, each with their own "island" of users that cannot bridge to other islands, I've become a bit disillussioned with the VoIP softphone market. Sure, there is talk about interoperability, support for SIP/SIMPLE, XMPP support, etc. but we still don't have a single unified client that can speak to
Skype users, AOL/AIM users, ICQ,
Google Talk, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, etc. Although, software such as GAIM is a multi-protocol client that aims to unify all of these IM/softphone clients, it too is incomplete. For one, it was designed mainly to handle instant messaging (IM) and not voice or video. Although, a branch of the open-source project called
GAIM VV was started to work on adding voice and video support, but it appears to be a dead project since the last posted news was October 2005.
This lack of a single unified client means I have to have like 4-5 IM/softphone clients running on my PC, which uses more memory, requires more time spent keeping each client up to date, uses more hard disk space, Registry bloat, and other inconveniences. It got me thinking though -
what features would I like to see to create the perfect VoIP softphone and IM client?
And so, here is my "wish list" for the perfect softphone/IM client...

Fark.com's tech page shows a story link to my 3-week old post on T-Mobile banning VoIP and IM. While I'm flattered to be on Fark.com's website, which I myself visit from time-to-time, why link to a three-week old story? Sheesh. C'mon, step it up. News cycles move fast around here.

How bout linking to my in-dept
Plantronics headset review or some of my
Vonage IPO posts?
Actually, the T-Mobile banning VoIP and IM is a story worth linking to even 3 weeks later. It hasn't gotten nearly the amount of press & attention it deserves.

Alec Saunders has an
interesting post about T@lkster, a solution that lets you make inexpensive long-distance calls from any mobile handset worldwide - without downloading new software to the mobile device. I think we're now up to 432,459 ways of initiating a call.

T@lkstar also features IM and presence. Alec compares them with Jajah and Rebtel. Go

Remember my
in-depth overview of EQO Communications and their mobile-to-VoIP (Skype), mobile-to-IM (GoogleTalk, AOL, Skype, etc.) and mobile-to-social communities software?
Well, I had word last week that tomorrow
EQO Communications will announce support for RIM Blackberry and Windows Mobile powered devices. With this latest release, Blackberry and Windows Mobile users will be able to access EQO Mobile, a platform that enables VoIP calling and instant messenger services (including AOL AIM, ICQ, GoogleTalk, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo! and Skype) on mobile devices.

According to EQO, the addition of handsets such as the Blackberry Pearl and Treo 700w brings the number of EQO-supported handsets to more than 400 mobile devices, including Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Palm, LG, Panasonic, Phillips, Siemens, Sanyo, Sharp and Samsung.
Although I already covered EQO extensively in a
prior post, essentially EQO gives you click-to-call mobile VoIP and click-to-chat mobile IM using a patent pending core IP that uses proprietary call signaling that is P2P-based and cross device/network domain. It leverages mobile data (SMS) to control the signalling and the mobile voice network for the media stream to the mobile phone, so for instance you don't need the Skype, AOL, GoogleTalk, etc. clients running on your cell phone.

Linksys has partnered with
Yahoo! to offer a new dual-mode cordless phone called the
Linksys Dual-Mode Cordless Phone for Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (CIT310).
Linksys sent me a review unit to check out and put through the paces. Similar to the
Linksys CIT200 Skype phone I reviewed, the Linksys Yahoo Messenger CIT310 gives you low-cost PSTN Outbound calling using VoIP and FREE voice calling to your Yahoo Messenger buddies. Similarly the CIT200 also offered low-cost VoIP calling but using Skype's SkypeOut service and free Skype-to-Skype calling. Both models also support inbound calling as well.

Linksys Dual-Mode Cordless Phone for Yahoo! Messenger with Voice on my desk
|
Both Linksys models also allow you to control your presence information (Away, Busy, Online, etc.) from the phone itself, as well as view the presence information for your "buddies" and instantly click-to-dial any of your buddies that you highlight. Unlike the Linksys CIT200 Skype phone however, the CIT310's base station not only supports USB connectivity to the PC,
but also an analog (FXO) port for connecting to your home landline - hence, the "Dual-Mode" moniker in the full product name. The analog port allows you to place and receive phone calls using your traditional landline/PSTN in addition to making calls utilizing the Yahoo Messenger with Voice service. A more apt comparison might be with the newer
Linksys CIT300 dual-mode cordless phone which supports Skype and a PSTN connection.
 |
|
Linksys CIT310 in cradle and backlit. Note the Yahoo smiley and Yahoo logo
|
The Linksys CIT310 features the wireless DECT standard, so it supports multiple handsets and has a range of 300 meters outdoor and 50 meters indoor. Standby time is 100 hours and talk time is 10 hours. The base station measures 3.9” x 4.7” x 2.9” W x H x D (99 x 119 x 74 mm) and weighs 7.69 oz (.218 kg). More importantly, the handset measure.8” x 5.5” x 1.08” W x H x D (46 x 140 x 27 mm) and weighs 3.39 oz (.096 kg).
Currently, the Linksys CIT310 only works with Windows - sorry Mac and Linux fans. Installing the Linksys Yahoo Messenger CIT310 was pretty straightforward. Insert the CD, follow the wizard, and then plug in the USB connector, which adds the device as a standard USB Audio Device.
The Linksys software runs in the background and is accessible via the System Tray, but there isn't much you can configure, although you can add Contacts from the utility. The software's main purpose really is to provide the integration with the base station and the Yahoo Messenger! with Voice software client. In any case, I then connected an analog line to the PSTN port on the back of the CIT310 so I could test regular landline calls. It's worth nothing that the CIT310 supports CallerID and can use CallerID number detection for distinctive ringtones by adding contacts to your address book.
If you already have a Yahoo Messenger account, you can simply sign-in and immediately make buddy-to-buddy calls or sign into
Yahoo's Voice Messenger page and purchase minutes for PSTN calls. In fact, after the wizard install you simply follow some web links to purchase minutes or add a PhoneIn number. Initial customers purchasing the Linksys Dual-Mode Cordless Phone receive 100 free minutes to make Yahoo! Phone Out calls to any traditional or mobile phone. International rates are 1-2 cents per minute.

We all have problems with our multiple digital address books, multiple IM/VoIP clients, which affects productivity - both professionally and personally. Checking each client to see which buddies are online or to look for a specific buddy is a pain if you run multiple clients like most of us do. So I was intrigued when Luca emailed me a tip about Hictu! and pointed me to the news in
his blog. In his blog, he writes:
What about having a "live" address book which provides information about your contacts' availability ? What about a presence-based address book ? What about something which really improves your "responsiveness" ? Hictu! is the solution. It's the latest product coming from Abbeynet, where our engineers work hard to create innovative services in the field of VoIP, presence and web. It has been released as a beta preview, so more features are still missed and will be available in the next upcoming versions.
Well, amen, brother! Hictu! integrated several popular IM/VoIP clients including MSN, Skype, Jabber, AIM, ICQ, Abbeyphone and Sitofono.

Even better, in the the next couple of weeks they plan to add the following features:
- Mobile presence (through a lightweight Symbian/Java client which will be linked to your mobile status and use)
- GTalk presence
- SightSpeed presence
- Gizmo Project presence
- Click to Call (already available for Abbeyphone and Sitofono)
- Hictu! widget
- Premium account (SMS, VoIP etc.)
- SuperStatus (what is it ? stay tuned...)
- FREE voicemail
- Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons
- many other cool featuresNicely done Luca! I'll have to try it out when I get a chance.
Check out the site for more. No if I could only figure out what Hictu means.

I recently discovered
Hotty.com, a website that is offering a new SIP VoIP Softphone,
Megapin Inc. has developed a few SIP and Jabber products that they offer to service providers and wholesalers to OEM, with full "skinning" capabilties. One of their prodis
M2-UA, a SIP softphone application and the other is
M2-IM, which has both SIP and Jabber IM/presence support. The M2-IM product will support
Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, AIM, ICQ, and
Google Talk. Their softphone products feature standard voice codecs including G.711, GSM, and Speex.

I was actually checking out the Hotty.com website last week, but now their homepage shows a 55 day countdown till the product launches. Where'd the content I saw last week go? Fortunately, I keep a very lengthy browser "cache", so I was able to copy the screenshots from my cache folder.
I still haven't figured out why Megapin, Inc. is using the domain name
hotty.com for a softphone application. Sounds like a porno site if you ask me. And if you look at the black background with the coundown clock it certainly has the feeling of a porn site to me. Either that or a hacker site, which often use a black background. Black is cool in hacker world. Maybe their softphone application will be targetted at online dating sites or perhaps sites with female "
hotties" taking inbound VoIP calls for some Phone Sex over IP (after you give your credit card number of course)
Well, only 55 more days till we find out what this is all about...
