More Sony Battery Woes — As in 7 Million … and Counting

7 million -- that's right.  That's what Sony's looking at with the latest news on a GLOBAL notebook battery recall.

We've got Apple, we've got Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo (IBM) all facing problems with Sony's batteries in their notebook computers.

I'd be worrying even if my notebook battery was part of this massive recall.

This seems to be one of those problems like spinach and E.coli that that just goes from bad to worse and beyond ...

... Is there more bad news on the way?

The Hard Drive Hits 50

Not too many gadgets hit the age of 50, especially in the world of computers, but the hard drive is still going strong at 50 years of age!

(I never would have guessed!)

(An age that many may feel depressed about while looking longily at retirement, which looms not that far on the horizon).

Now, analysts are predicting that more drives will be sold over the next five years than in all the previous years combined.

The hard drive has become ubiquitous, being used in everything from iPods to TiVos to cars (that sounds funny)-- and still in computers, for that matter.

Nice brief from CEA Smartbriefs, which points to the always reliable The Mercury News, which has the whole great story.

And yes, that big bad thing to the left is the first hard drive, with 50 spinning, 24-inch-wide disks covered with red paint.

(Like the red paint touch -- wonder why they picked that color?  After all, it was an IBM product that came out of the lab in Silicon Valley -- San Jose, to be exact).

Train Spotting

Maybe it's the intense heat (hot as blazes!), but seems to be a drop in gadget use on the train this morning.

(I thought everyone was goin' mobile!)

Last time, seems that just about half the commuters had some sort of gadget that they were using to pass the time (mobile phone, iPod or other MP3 player, notebook computer, Blackberry), but today that percent dropped to less than 1 in 10 (that 10% -- but let's not rush back to school quite yet).

Today, we had a couple of Dell notebooks (one IBM ThinkPad -- or was it Lenovo?), an iPod, Blackberry and Treo -- and that's about it.

Let's see if gadget usage increases in the fall, when it should be cooler ...

Cold Chips Go Very Fast!

Researchers at IBM and the Georgia Institute of Technology recently announced that they have broken the speed record for silicon-based chips with a semiconductor that operates 250 times faster than chips commonly used today. (New York Times reports.)

(No, not the chips on the left.)

The achievement has been called a major step in the evolution of computer semiconductor technology that could eventually lead to faster networks and more powerful electronics at lower prices. Developments typically find their way into commercial products in 12 to 24 months.

The researchers, using a cryogenic test station, achieved the speed milestone by "freezing" the chip to 451 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, using liquid helium. That temperature, normally found only in outer space, is just nine degrees above absolute zero, or the temperature at which all movement is thought to cease.

Dan Olds, a principal at the Gabriel Consulting Group, a technology consulting firm in Portland, OR, said the development was significant because it showed that the chip industry had not yet reached its upper limits.

The research group included students from Georgia Tech and Korea University in South Korea as well as researchers from IBM Microelectronics.

The results are reported in this month's issue of the IEEE Electron Device Letters. (Sure everyone is familiar with that pub ...)

(Andrew on Jul 6, 2006 6:27 PM) Ok, that is cool - however I don't remember seeing a 'liquid helium' section at Best Buy. Or am I missing the big picture?

(Randy Savicky on Jul 7, 2006 9:51 AM) Not yet at least ...

IBM @ Home (The Digital Home, That Is)

Irving Wladawsky-Berger, IBM's vice president of technical strategy and innovation, has been one of the company’s foremost thinkers regarding Internet strategy and emerging technologies. Among other things, he has led IBM's work on Linux and managed services, aka "On Demand" computing.

He recenlty spoke with Digital Connect’s Heather Clancy about how IBM's work on the next-generation Internet will bring the venerable business technology powerhouse into the burgeoning digital home market. A fascinating interview -- don't miss it! at this link.
