Not to be outdone by Dell's deal with Alienware (and not to be confused with the Congressional hearing (aka "HP FUD" -- Fear Uncertaincy and Doubt) now going on, Hewlett-Packard plans to buy niche PC manufacturer Voodoo Computers.
Voodoo makes cool looking, high-end PCs (expensive!) that are popular with gamers. We've blogged about them previously -- some hot boxes!
Will be interesting to see how the PC companies (Dell and HP) fare against game-console manufacturers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
Another battle of the titans to enjoy ...

Ten years ago, camera companies had nothing to worry about except each other.
But poof! along came digital cameras and the Kodak, Fuji and Nikon's of the camera world had to worry about consumer technology companies like Sony or IT companies (at least back then) like HP.
Funny thing is, while the camera companies -- both old and new -- battled each other for survival (market share) their core imaging technology got scooped up as a cool feature in mobile phones.
Today, there are now more camera phones in the world than there are film or digital cameras. According to digital imaging analyst firm Lyra Research, the installed base of camera phones will reach approximately 850 million units in 2006, and this number will grow to more than 1.5 billion units in 2010.
Here's what Steve Hoffenberg, Lyra's director of consumer imaging research, had to say:
"In less than five years since the very inception of this product category, camera phones have gone from nonexistent to predominant. We're still in the early stages of market development for mobile imaging. Picture quality is still immature, and market penetration has largely been supply-side driven.
"But camera phone picture quality will improve substantially over the next several years, upstream transmission bandwidth will increase and consumers will become increasingly familiar with the incredible inherent benefit of wireless connectivity for images."
Will be interested to see what 2010 looks like ...

Nice big article in yesterday's New York Times about how electronics makers like HP and Dell (among many others) are suddenly waking up and going "green."
Seems this drive for "more environmentally conscious" behavior is really motivated by another type of green -- as in money. As these companies recycle products at their huge recycling plants, they are pulling out precious metals in greater quantities than are currently being pulled out of the ground by mining companies. (We're talking gold and silver here as well as others.)
To me, it's a win-win situation -- guess it is pretty easy to be green after all.

Everybody may talk about how great their HP printers are, but there are some very good choices out there if you want to break away from the crowd. I’ve been testing the Konica Minolta Magicolor 2450 for some time now, and this one color laser printer that provides “workhouse” capabilities at 5 pages-per-minute (PPM) color and 20 PPM black & white.
A true desktop printer that fits easily into any environment, the Magicolor 2450 is designed for easy use. The pre-installed 4,500-page toner cartridges mean the machine is up and running in just a few minutes. Auto-run installation software automatically detects the printer on your network and guides you step-by-step through set-up. Comprehensive printer drivers simplify printing with options such as collation, fit-to-page scaling, separation pages, watermarks, tray selection, and secure printing, while the Desktop Status Monitor utilizes a pop-up window on your screen for notification of print job status and supply levels.
The PageScope suite of printer management utilities provides real-time consumables status, as well as remote printer management and configuration. Simple, full-front access makes it easy to reload supplies and clear paper jams (come on, every printer gets them once in a while), so there's no need to access the back of the machine. Now let’s get technical (and under the hood).
Output is brilliant, consistent color, with 9600 x 600 dpi-class Photo ART contone resolution generating more than 4,000 colors per dot to provide enhanced photographic detail and smooth color gradients. Enhanced Automatic Image Density Control (eAIDC) automatically calibrates the printer so you can count on consistent, accurate color from the first page to the last. Automatic ICC-based color matching provides single-button controls for automatic color correction of print files.
The Simitri Polymerized Toner produces sharp output, fine text and better halftones. It also reduces toner consumption by up to 30%, keeps the printer cleaner and is more environmentally friendly than other toner technologies.
PostScript 3 and PCL 6 printer emulations support popular software applications, allowing the seamless creation and processing of all your color documents. Window and Macintosh system compatibility offers support for mixed workgroups and networks.
The net net: Great color laser printer at a price that won’t break the bank.

The computer printer market has been pretty much HP's for such a long time now it's hard to believe there's much competition (but don't tell Lexmark, Epson or Canon that ...)
Now, in what could have seismic implications in this pretty staid market, Lenovo is planning to make an entrance (and we mean major, as in major entrance) into the printer market.
According to Lyra Research, Lenovo has a vision for a Chinese consortium of printer and supplies makers. Such a Chinese consortium, operating under the protection of the Chinese government, could have a major impact on foreign printer makers’ sales in the domestic Chinese market.
If Lenovo succeeds in creating a global competitor, the vast printer markets in India and other emerging nations may be up for grabs.
(And how about the good old U.S. of A.?)
Larry Jamieson, director of Lyra's Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service, said, "Companies such as Canon, Epson and HP stand to lose significant market share rapidly if Lenovo's strategy is realized. By realigning and leveraging existing infrastructure from numerous domestic printer makers, Lenovo's consortium could realize major gains in the Chinese market and will be poised, essentially, to take on the world's markets."
Isn't it always something ...

From the "Now, I've heard everything" pile, we have a report that HP (aka Hewlett-Packard) and Pentax are planning to release digital cameras with "slimming" feature that will make objects (guess what?) slimmer.
Yes, you have heard correctly.
Due to the miracle of editing capabilities, subjects will now appear slimmer -- so instead of dieting or other ways to keep food out of your mouth as well as increasing your aerobic output to "slim down," we can now just push a button, do a quick edit and look slimmer.
(But will we feel slimmer?)
And can you imagine the comments: "Can you please take that picture again? I'd like to look slimmer."
(And thanks to www.carnivalmirror.com for the goofy image.)

How about this for irony -- a simple hack enables Nintendo's Wii to access a computer's media collection, with the Wii remote (you know, the one with the strap problem) then being used to view
photos and browse iTunes playlists on a TV.
Isn't this the convergence of the computer and home entertainment that the big boys (Microsoft, HP, Sony, etc.) have been battling for over the past few years.
(Makes the battles and intrigues of Lord of the Rings seem tame ... better comparison anyone?)
Get the whole story here, and please let me know if you get this to work at home ...
And as if Wii sales aren't giving Sony and Microsoft fits already?
