MP3.com founder to Jobs: open up iTunes and iPods. Do you agree?

Michael Robertson, who founded MP3.com, knows a few things about selling downloaded music over the Internet. As such, Michael has the cred to challenge Apple CEO Steve Jobs when Steve says that Digital Rights Management is outmoded and that the major music labels need to be more open-minded about technology and security for downloading and [...]

Z-z-z-z-une dude is iPod food

Earlier this week it was announced that Bryan Lee, corporate vice president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, was going to take an early retirement. Mr. Lee is 43.   Also probable is that Allard might have to work quickly to deliver a level of success for Zune, or he could find his position [...]

Verizon iPhone could have been a reality

USAToday's Leslie Cauley reports that as long as two years ago, Apple and Steve Jobs held initial discussions with Verizon about the carrier becoming exclusive distributor for the then-envisioned iPhone. If so, we would have seen Verizon's logo all over the ad at the top, not Cingular's. Didn't happen. Verizon reportedly balked, because they wanted a degree of [...]

Cisco kids not by suing Apple over iPhone: so what do you think of this mess?

As many of you know by now, Cisco filed a trademark infringement suit against Apple for the iPhone today. Details here. My colleague Larry Dignan got an advance warning earlier this morning: In an email to me earlier today, Cisco spokesman John Noh said: "The fact is that we have not received the approved agreement back from Apple as [...]

WSJ:: Apple, Cingular will announce cell phone tomorrow at Macworld

CNN Money reports that The Wall Street Journal says Apple has selected Cingular Wireless to provide wireless service for a new Apple-branded cellphone. WSJ rarely gets it wrong. I tend to believe… When Steve Jobs delivers his Macworld Expo keynote, we'll know more. One question: will such a phone cannibalize iPod sales?

Intertainer’s infringement suit: don’t automatically think “Patent troll”

As The New York Times noted earlier this week, defunct video-on-demand company Intertainer filed a lawsuit asserting that Apple, Google and Napster are infringing on a 2005 patent that covers the commercial distribution of audio and video over the Internet. Based on that information I decided to look at that patent and see if there [...]

Lovin’ the MacBook

I've been a long-time Windows user and, for the most part, been a happy camper. Despite a steady campaign from my brother-in-law, I've never considered a move to the Mac side of the house...until I started using a MacBook. Whether it's the novelty, the fact the MacBook is super-fast, or whether the Mac is just a better way to go, I've become a convert. The biggest challenge is getting hold of all the software (e.g. Mac for Office) that I had in my library. I've been playing around with 1Passwd as a password manager but still far from convinced it's better than Roboform. I've also got to play with QuickSilver some more to figure out how to take advantage of what it has to offer. That said, the MacBook is a joy. Any tips on software, features, secrets, etc. would be much appreciated.

More Sony Battery Woes — As in 7 Million … and Counting

7 million -- that's right.  That's what Sony's looking at with the latest news on a GLOBAL notebook battery recall.

We've got Apple, we've got Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo (IBM) all facing problems with Sony's batteries in their notebook computers.

I'd be worrying even if my notebook battery was part of this massive recall.

This seems to be one of those problems like spinach and E.coli that that just goes from bad to worse and beyond ...

... Is there more bad news on the way?

A Hot One for Lenovo!!!

Holy flaming laptops Batman!

Crazy stuff just keeps on happening in the saga of explodiing notebook computers.  Now we have Lenovo pledging today that public safety "will be the company's first priority" following an incident in which a Lenovo ThinkPad T43 laptop (with a Sony battery; any surprise there?) caught fire at Los Angeles International Airport recently. That's the culprit pictured at right.

(Now that's scary!)

Now Lenovo engineers are working around the clock at laboratories in Japan and Raleigh, N.C., to determine the cause of the fire. Seems no other laptops have met a similar fate, but makes you wonder if the laptop you have at home or in the office or on the train or on a plane with you may suddenly go crazy on you ...

Interestingly, the "fiery" T43 used the same Sony battery cells that were at the center of a recall of nearly 6 million Dell and Apple laptops earlier this year, but the battery pack has a different design than those of Apple and Dell. Lenovo's design is aimed at shutting down the system before it gets to the point of extreme overheating (always a good idea, I say!).

Computer Reseller News (or CRN to its fans) had some good coverage of this latest string of bad news for anyone who likes to be mobile and computing.

Yep, that's what I hear by keeping my ears open.

Pearl Now or Pearl Later?

The BlackBerry Pearl is getting rave reviews (Walter Mossberg, the NYT's David Pogue, Mark Evans :), etc.) and sales have been extremely brisk (some stores apparently sold out in the first week). That said, I'm wondering if news about a Pearl-like BlackBerry with a QWERTY keyboard (called the Blackberry 8800) will take some momentum out of the Pearl's sales. To be clear, there are a lot of people excited about the Pearl's cool look and feel and the fact it comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera as well as a video and music player. There are, however, some people less than enthused about the SureType keypad, even though it seems as easy to use as a QWERTY keypad. As information about the BlackBerry 8800 starts to escape from the geekdom (a.k.a. Engadget, BBHub, etc.) to the mainstream press will consumers decide to hold off on buying a Pearl until the 8800 is launched? As much as the Pearl is compelling, RIM may need to ramp up its marketing to show people how easy it is to use the SureType keypad.
Update: According to Think Secret, Apple plans to launch its iPhone exclusively with Cingular early next year. The iPhone will feature a 3-megapixel camera, iTunes and iSync.Apple apparently believe iPhone shipments will be 25 million in 2007. Engadget also has a post.

U2 iPod Gets an Update

Always like the concept of the U2 iPod, and now it's been updated with a new lower price (still garners a premium, though, according to some recent blogs.

Toshiba Battery Problems! Here We Go Again (Sony)!

Can you believe this?

Now Toshiba is recalling 340,000 batteries from their notebook computers that were made by (who else!) Sony  apparently because of problems with recharging them.

Interestingly, this problem is not directly related to the one behind last month's recalls by Dell and Apple that cited concerns the batteries could overheat and catch fire. This time, the batteries sometimes stop recharging or simply run out of power; no injuries have been reported.

Hey, let's do the numbers:

(If we graph this numbers, does this indicate a downward trend in battery problems?)

The Toshiba recall involves batteries for Dynabook and Satellite models made from March through May; they will be replaced for free.

How Much Is That Zune in the Window?

Does anybody really know the price of Microsoft's new Zune?

(Does anybody really care? Hey, sounds like a tune from Chicago, or Chicago Transit Authority as the band was originally known.)

Seems Apple's new iPod pricing threw Microsoft for a loop, according to reports, so the retail pricing for the product is still up in the air.

Lots of intrigue about how to market a product in this story, with one of the key marketing "Ps" (there are four) -- price -- still a big question mark.

Is this anyway to run a company?

Apple Cell Phone in 2007?

Disappointed that the Apple mobile phone wasn't the big news this week from "Showtime," but now reports are in that the "iPhone" may be coming early next year.

It now seems more likely that thisi whiz bang gadget  may be announced at the Macworld shindig in early January, if "significant technical hurdles" can be overcome.

Makes you wonder about all the wonderful creativity and technology that gets jammed into our gadgets, doesn't it?

Smaller, better, faster ...

(And don't think you'll see Motorola cell phones too much on the Apple site in the future once their own phone is out there ...)

What Happened to the Apple Cell Phone?

Of course we are all very excited about all of Apple's announcements yesterday, like iTunes 7.0, its movie downloads and ways to get them from the computer to the TV, but where's the Apple cell phone?

Toronto Film Festival Movies Online?

If you didn't know it already, the Toronto International Film Festival is now going on - and it seems the entire city has a really bad case of celebrity-itis. (evidence: Brad Pitt press conference/love-in) In the Before Children (BC) era, my wife and I used to see a handful of films, most of which never appeared at movies theatres let alone the local Blockbuster. These days, I'm lucky to see one film (usually the Rogers Gala - this year it was "Penelope"). Given there are so many great films at the festival, wouldn't it be great if you could access them on the Web after the festival is over? Putting aside all those tricky technical, distribution and copyright issues, it would give a much wider audience the opportunity to see movies, and provide film makers/distributors with another source of revenue. This idea seems like such a win-win, no-brainer that I'm surprised it hasn't been explored earlier. And with Apple planning to offer movie downloads via iTunes, it's an idea whose time has come. (For Steve Jobs fans, check out Om Malik's post: "Is Steve Jobs Bill Gates 2.0?").

iPod Becoming Uncool?

According to an article in the U.K.'s fine newspaper, The Guardian, mainstream adoption of Apple's iPod is making it less cool. (Really?)

This is from industry analysts who speculate the music player has peaked in popularity.

Adding to the iPod's apparent "trouble" are mobile phones with music players. (If only they got it right ...)

Now industry analysts are noted for predicting the future, which in the land of gadgets is very hard; seems their crystal balls sometimes need to be cleaned (or maybe they just get fogged up a bit).

Think they've got it right this time?

Apple Cell Phone on Its Way?

Why is this man smiling, you ask?

Don't suppose it's in response to all of the recent chatter about Apple's September 12 special meeting/announcement and, separately, Apple's cell phone plans.

Universal’s Making Music Free (With a Catch …)

Looks like today's blogging is all about more and more.

Now we have Universal Music, home to artists such as U2, planning to make its catalog of recordings and music videos available for free on an ad-supported Web site that will launch later this year.

According to the buzz, SpiralFrog.com will split advertising revenue with the recording company.

Users can download an unlimited number of songs or music videos if they register at the site. Tracks cannot be burned to a CD, but users will be able to transfer music to portable media players equipped with Microsoft Windows digital rights management software.

However, the service will not work with Apple's Macintosh computers or its market-leading iPod music players. (Is that a good idea?)

Fine reporting from The Washington Post.

Much Ado About Schmidt?

So Google CEO Eric Schmidt has joined Apple's board of directors. Count on the blogosphere to put two and two together to five...or six or seven. Does this portend an Apple-Google mega-merger? Will Google provide iTunes with even more momentum to sell millions of those white earphones...er, I mean iPods? People have to remember Silicon Valley is an incestuous, tightly-woven spider's web where everyone knows everyone else. Speculate all you want about what Schmidt's appointment could man but don't let your imaginations get too carried away. What I can tell you is Apple has an intriguingly divergent board - ranging from environmentalist/ex-U.S. VP Al Gore to J. Crew CEO Millard Drexler to Mr. Jobs.

More Hazards To Consider!

First Dell, then Apple and now Black & Decker!

(The woes of manufacturers continue!)

Just received an email from Amazon (where I bought the thing) that my Black & Decker Cordless Electric Lawn Mower "has an electrical component in it that can overheat, posing a fire hazard" (!!!!!!).

Now maybe you don't consider it a gadget (or even a toy), but it sure is neat to tool around the yard cutting the lawn without the roar and pollution of a gas-powered motor (but that threat of fire does dampen my enthusiasm).

(And no, that isn't me in the photo.)

Sony Takes a Hit on Battery Problems

Not surprising to see Sony taking a stock hit on its 10 days of woe (Dell battery problems, Apple battery problems -- is there more coming?).

(Actually wondered why Dell got raked through the fire -- no pun intended -- when the problem was with Sony-supplied batteries.)

Marketwatch reports today on the financial hit, but what about Sony's brand image, which has been consistently ranked very high and which they have spent millions to nurture? How much of a hit will that take?

Let's hear from the people! Will you think twice about buying a Sony product?

How About a New Battery Standard?

With all of the noise about Dell's exploding batteries and increasing in-flight security precautions, isn't it about time that battery manufacturers got their act together to make better batteries?

Well, it doesn't take along ...

According to the always interesting AppleInsider, leading notebook makers Apple, Dell, and Lenovo will be holding a summit meeting next month to begin development of standards for the manufacture of lithium ion batteries for portable and handheld electronics.

You see, these companies are part of the OEM Critical Components Committee of the IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industries -- an organization of 2,400 companies which represent all facets of the electronic interconnection industry, including design, printed circuit board manufacturing and electronics assembly.

Apparently the Committee had identified lithium ion batteries as the next product for standardization, but is going to accelerate its activities because of all of the recent (bad) news.

Nokia Gets Loud in Mobile Music via Loudeye Buy

Another titanic struggle is in the making -- this time in the digital convergence of music and the cell phone.

While we all wait for Apple's mobile phone announcement, the established mobile phone companies are staking out their ground in the mobile music market.

We already know about Verizon Wireless and V Cast (a service provider goes mobile music) and now we have Nokia (a cell phone set manufacturer) countering with its purchase of Loudeye, which has a digital music catalogue of 1.5 million tracks.

(The price you ask? $60 million.)

The deal will give Nokia content it can offer customers with music-enabled mobile phones. "People should be able to access all the music they want, anywhere, anytime and at a reasonable cost," Nokia EVP Anssi Vanjoki said, according to the BBC.

Here's some more verbiage from the "official press release":

"Music is a key experience for Nokia and Nokia Nseries multimedia computers and we want to be able to offer the best fully integrated mobile music experience to our customers. Loudeye brings a number of key assets to Nokia, including a great team of people, a substantial content catalogue and a robust service platform that will help us to achieve this objective," said Vanjoki. "People should be able to access all the music they want, anywhere, anytime and at a reasonable cost. With this acquisition, we aim to deliver that vision and a comprehensive music experience to Nokia device owners during 2007."

Love that "vision" thing ...

Leopard Server, Now That’s Some Sizzle

With all the attention devoted to the desktop version, the real reason to wait for OS X Leopard might be the “server edition” of the software. They are offering a scheduling/calendar server, Wiki Server, Podcasting production platform and a whole set of goodies such as Ruby as part of their server OS X release. Rui Carmo, who pens the always informative The Tao of Mac writes, “the big news is that they are at least paying lip service to groupware and the most common server-centric CSCW mechanism - the shared calendar.” Niall quips: “Your Xserve is now Web 2.0 compliant!.”

The Steve Jobs Show at WWDC’06 is finally over. All the name calling, new gear and fancy stuff aside, the big takeaway is that Mac OS X’s next version, Leopard is going to be one of the most complete OSes to leverage broadband connections, and even higher speed pipes available inside our home.

Stepping back, the new oomph Apple is putting into its computing hardware allows the users to run multiple applications. Almost all these apps (with the exception of older apps such as Microsoft Word and Excel, feed off the broadband pipe.

Each one incrementally demands more bandwidth. As many Mac users will get used to the new OS, they will also suddenly realize that the bandwidth allocated to them by the ISPs is not enough, and would opt for speed upgrades.

While it might not be available for atleast six months, here are some initial thoughts:

Spotlight: Apple is giving Spotlight even more oomph. Has too - we are seeing the digital clutter in our lives just increase by the day. The drives are just getting better and of course we need better home network search technology.

“Spotlight was one of the great features of Tiger. We’re going to make Spotlight even better in Leopard. First thing we’re going to do is enable you to use Spotlight to search other machines.” This means that if you’re at home and you have several Macs in the house, you can search any of them. We’re also adding the ability to search servers and find exactly what you’re looking for.”

Enhanced Mail 3: “You send the most beautiful email messages you can ever imagine. You can keep track of them in a separate notes inbox.”

Bigger emails like the ones Steve is talking about need more bandwidth… a lot of it, in both directions, upstream and downstream.

Dashcode and Webclips: They turn everything into a little widget for the desktop.

From webcams to webpages now sit on the desktop, sipping from the broadband pipe, offering you the latest in real time. Again a bandwidth-using application.

The New iChat: The demoed iChat does streaming video, background sharing, photo and file sharing in realtime over the iChat connection. Again the increased use of this app is going to add to the need for more bandwidth.

Front Row: There are sketchy details on this, but their website says, you could watch videos and listen to music over your LAN/Wireless LAN. Needs further investigation. This ties in with our ongoing thesis that bandwidth inside the four walls of our homes is increasing faster than the connections to the Internet. You can read about it here and here.

iPhone or GPhone

With Apple’s WWDC hours away, the rumor machine is in full gear. There is a lot of speculation about iPhone, the fabled Apple phone that may (or may not) change the wireless handset world. Chances of its appearance this week are slim, but the clock is ticking for Apple. So while w
