Palo Alto Daily News reports that the two Bay Area cities are close to signing off on trial zones for their MuniFi efforts. Brian Moura, assistant city manager of San Carlos told the newspaper that two “one-square-mile testing spots in Palo Alto and San Carlos may be ready as soon as late February.” Each square mile would have between 35-to-40 access points that would be installed on street poles for four month trial period. This trial is part of the big Wireless Silicon Valley initiative.

I've just been playing with Fring. I wrote a post some months ago Fringing Interesting. It was a quick glance at Andy's blog today that told me to take another look.
Download and install was simple and easy to do. At first I couldn't get Fring to connect to my Skype Account or Google Talk. Their support department suggested that demand may have been a problem. Anyways tonight on my lousy home Indian broadband it connected. Initial call quality better than my recent calls with Truphone. And I've been swearing by Truphone. See my previous post. In a day in this world everything can change.
Possible Impact: (based on six hours of experience)
Anyone that has a Skype centric-life and has a N80 or appropriate Nokia, can connect with WiFi and manage the interruptions or the beeps will adopt this for their general Skype messaging around the home and office. I will turn Skype on my desktop off for the rest of the week and see how it goes. (This means that Skype has really blown it re mobile) Just obsoleted all those WiFi phones that are coming out. Why waste the $150 or so....
These elements are standouts.

This isn’t totally a tech-related post but….a good friend, Mark Walker, is opening a new indoor golf simulator facility in downtown Toronto called InnerGolf. For anyone looking to hone their game during the off-season or simply play an indoor round (it takes about an hour), it’s definitely work checking out.
Mark, who along with me and Rob Botman, was one of Blanketware’s co-founders, is a true, dyed-in-the-wool entrepreneur. Aside from InnerGolf, he operates an ERP consulting business called Skyytek Canada, which is one of the leading re-sellers of the NetSuite product.
