Digium Raises $13.2M

Digium CEO Mark Spencer has spent a lot of time over the past few years politely turning aside the advances of VCs but he has finally caved in by taking $13.8-million from Matrix Partners. For open-source supporters, it's another sign the "movement" has gone legit. Of course, Red Hat buying JBoss for $420-million earlier this year was a pretty good sign that open source was entering the mainstream. So why did Spencer, who I once described as the Linus Torvalds of IP-PBX, taking the cash? Well, it's not exactly clear because he says Digium, which oversees development of Asterisk and sells related hardware and services, doesn't really need it. In talking with Spencer, it sounds like he's aware of the growing competition from small and larger rivals, and wants to make sure Digium has the cash it needs to strategically respond. "This is really about trying to make sure we do the right things going forward," he said. "When you start out, there is a lot of room when you are making a new industry to make some mistakes and get away with it. As you get farther along and get people on your tail and paying attention to what you are doing, you have a lot less room, and we need to make sure we preserve a lot of the things we have done that are good."  Spencer said the deal with Matrix, which financed JBoss, is not a traditional VC arrangement. While declining to provide a lot of details, he said it "preserves the spirit of the company and leave the company in control" - nice terms if you can get them. Of course, Digium had some clout given it's been profitable since 2002 and growing revenue by 100% a year.

Mobile Phones: Who Needs All of Those Features?

Here's the study I've been waiting for.

According to a recent PC World/IDB News Service report, feature-rich phones do not drive sales. (Really?)

The study, by J.D. Power and Associates (they of the manmy car satisfaction surveys) showed that U.S. consumers are more interested in the price and design of their mobile phone rather than its advanced features.

(And probably don't intend to use those advanced features, either.)

Here's another useful fact from the survey: Almost 30% of respondents said they selected a particular phone because it was free (the most powerful four-letter word in the English language).

(And what's wrong with a free phone -- haven't we all gone that route?)

Finally, let's not pick on Nokia ...

Microsoft “Genuine Advantage” cracked

Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" was cracked in just 24 hours according to a 2005 Boing Boing article. The crack simply required adding some Javascript to your browser window.

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

This simply crack used to work, but Microsoft is now getting serious about stopping pirated software. Just today, Microsoft Watch stated "Come this fall, however, the Redmond software maker is planning to turn up the Genuine Advantage heat in two ways: By baking more Genuine Advantage checks directly into Windows Vista, and by taking aim at PC makers, system builders, Internet cafes and other sources of potentially pirated software."

YIKES! Maybe it's time to buy some Microsoft stock since no doubt MS will get a stock boost from many illigitimate users simply paying for a legitimate copy rather than play "tit for tat" with Microsoft, which keeps "tweaking" the WGA code to thwart users using pirated versions of Windows XP/2003 (and soon Vista).

But if your so inclined to play the "game" of hacking WGA and are looking for other methods of cracking Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) you can check out the plethora of comments below for various cracking methods. Good luck!

(Sdrast on Jan 14, 2006 8:00 AM) If you have windows Xp Pro, change the key to this QYPXW-F9K84-PBW8P-VPWQ9-TRT7M and you can download all the "Genuine Advantage" items.

(ian on Jan 14, 2006 12:32 PM) that didnt work for me, changed key using instructions from microsoft's knowledge base. then restarted. still unable to install the genuine advantage prog.

(Ryan on Mar 1, 2006 12:52 AM) Hi- The new updates (released 1 - March) prevent you from updating your PC by WGA. Anyone know how to get around this?

(Smitty on Mar 3, 2006 8:15 PM) Sure, just go to windows update, paste this in the URL and hit return: javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') Then click "Custom" or "Express". Just worked for me.

(Ryan on Mar 3, 2006 8:59 PM) Actually - I found the new .dll, just put it into your system32 folder- See thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3451614 for the download

(PimpDawg on Mar 6, 2006 2:59 PM) javascript:void (window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') WORKS LIKE A CHARM! Thanks!

(You all have it wrong on Mar 30, 2006 12:51 PM) The javascript is a pain in the butt! Open IE Goto tools, internet options Go to Programs tab click on "Manage add-ons" In the list highlight "Windows Genuine Validation Tool" At the bottom if you can click on disable you have the older version. Click on disable. Click close. Open IE and run windows updates with no problem. If you have the newer version the bottom will say "this add-on is managed by your administrator" and you won't be able to run windows updates. Download the new legitcontrol.dll patcher

(buttpains on Apr 2, 2006 12:13 PM) The easy javascript insertion crack is working! IT WORKS, THANKS!

(Koldrez128 on Apr 6, 2006 2:25 AM) Holy hell this easy? Thanks a heap guys!

(tttt on Apr 28, 2006 3:14 AM) I didn't find a real solution yet but you can set the "get genuine" stuff off by going to the star in the tray and right click mouse "Change notification settings"

(Peter171 on Apr 28, 2006 4:51 PM) Just to say THANKS to "tttt" Your info worked 100%.

(Howard Smith on Apr 28, 2006 7:01 PM) Annoying new Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) removed. This comes up when you log onto windows if you download this update forcing you to have to wait 5 secoonds for this to load before you can log into windows. microsoft not the brightest since I have easily removed it. Basically its a file called wgatray.exe so to disable it go into the Registry, Run, regedit, search for wga and delete the entries.

(wherbjr35 on Apr 28, 2006 11:18 PM) I was able to crack the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) patch by doing 2 things. First, I did a system restore to a "system checkpoint" that was prior to 2 instances of something called "Software Distribution Service 2.0" If you scroll through your available system checkpoints, you should see several entries, mine happened to be over 2 different days. So I just happened to restore from Friday when I installed the patch, to Wednesday. Secondly, I just disabled Windows Updates. I did this because it kept launching after I did the restore. Good luck.

(KruGer/.JuiCe. on Apr 30, 2006 9:23 AM) Sycosnake, 9down rulez! :) 10x a million 4 da link...

(Simon Sez on May 2, 2006 8:19 AM) Thanks the above information helped alot Simon Sezz

(Ramyras on May 3, 2006 5:27 PM) To remove tray icon and notyfier picture and 5 sec window on logon I did it: Delete files wgatray.exe form C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ Download\ cb2769f3b1daf367a31ed046299a3790\ (last folder not the same) delete WGATRAY.EXE-0ED38BED.pf file from C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\ Remove from regitry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon and wgatray from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603\ P.S. Sorry for my english :D

(Oasisman on May 3, 2006 9:38 PM) Ramyras......Cheers, your english is perfect and your directions golden. I had a machine that downloaded the Genuine Advatage tool and used your work around......everything is back to normal. The only other thing I did was replace the LegitCheckControl.dll with an older version. This was a quick and easy fix. Your efforts are much appreciated.

(texy on May 4, 2006 12:31 AM) Got a question for you guys. How can you change the key for windows? I have a legit key I bought but the u button is disabled when I try to change the key. any ideas??

(wobbler on May 4, 2006 7:26 PM) Didnt enjoy those nasty messages on my screen so did the following : 1. Tried to delete c:\windows\system32\wgatray.exe - Access Denied as it was in use 2. Right-click on the STAR icon and select the Change Notification. Takes you to a web site where you can elect to stop displaying Genuine Advantage messages (see - Bill Gates isnt so bad after all !). 3. Renamed the WGALOGON Registry entries mentioned in earlier posting to 'rubbish' (Couldnt find the wgatray entry in ACMru/5603 though) 4. Renamed c:\windows\system32\wgatray.exe to sswgatray.exe - Couldnt delete but could rename 5. Deleted dfilwe in C:\Windows\Prefetch as mentioned in earlier posting Rebooted and no more Genuine Advantyage BUT the 'Windows Update' icon is turned on. Will advise family NOT to click on it. Will attemtp to change my product key and then collect updates. Thanks to everyone for your help.

(Memphis on May 5, 2006 8:14 AM) WGALOGON is very simple to disable. Hijackthis is 100% able to do so. Run hijack find wgalogon check mark it and remove. Fairly simple, though this does not remove it from the system it does remove the logon ballons and the 5 sec timer.

(cheears on May 5, 2006 4:18 PM) Are you guys able to install IE7 or Windows Defender without any hassle after doing all this? I've done it and still no luck. My WindowsDefender shows error message that "invalid VLK" and IE7 is still grabbing me to validation. Any help?

(VoIP Forum on May 6, 2006 3:34 AM) I have windows XP , but its not working..Microsoft guys must be wondering whats the problem with their coding that a crack appers before the launch of software. http://www.voip-traffic.com/

(Bridgette on May 6, 2006 6:38 AM) MISTAKE IN MY POST! SORRY! 1. Click Start, and then click Run 2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK 3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT 4. Repeat steps 4-6 for the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl .LegitCheck.1 which is right below the above subkey Now you should be able to install the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool! VoIP, did this work for you?

(VoIP routes on May 6, 2006 6:46 AM) Thanks for asking.. But dear i am not able to find LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Its not there...

(Bridgette on May 6, 2006 7:14 AM) Have you been here before?: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/WhyValidate.aspx If not, once you are there, click on Validate Now. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX control. I think that is where LegitCheckControl comes from. I may be wrong, but after this and if you are still unable to install the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool, repeat the steps I listed in my last post. Then try to install the Genuine Advantage tool from the Windows Update site. I hope this works for you.

(Mikeyyy on May 6, 2006 2:49 PM) http://www.9down.com/downloads.php WORKSS FOR REAL!! Choose ''Software'' and then pick the ''Windows Genuine Advantage Validation v1.5.526.0 Cracked'' file!!. I just tried with succes! :D

(fotis on May 17, 2006 12:58 PM) i just downloaded windows media player 11 beta for xp. i validated my windows using the way mentioned with the crack from 9down and succeeded validation but the setup of media player says am not validaded. whats wrong with it? thanks a lot

(512 on May 17, 2006 5:08 PM) it doesn't work on my pc...plz help :'(

(Bridgette on May 17, 2006 9:33 PM) Has anyone tried the method I posted with success?

(RBixby on May 18, 2006 3:11 AM) It all works... it took me a while but you just have to start from the beginning and do everything they are telling you to do... don't give up... it just took me a good 2 hours to figure everything out... trial and error!

(512 on May 18, 2006 1:06 PM) I have problems installing windows defender beta, WMP 11 beta, IE7 beta...

(bzemer on May 18, 2006 3:32 PM) I installed IE 7b2 (with validation dll crack)and it works - i mean i passed the validation and everything, but i don't see the tabs at all... nada.. This is really weird and annoying. Does anyone know why that happened? maybe the validation crack damaged the installation?

(Merik on May 19, 2006 1:43 PM) You need different tricks to crack the genuine validation for other softwares. Simply search google for that tool and validation (do not even add the phrase "crack" to your search keywords) and you will find the solution in the first 10 results! Something else, when I try to update my not genuine windows machine (and I have not installed KB905474 yet, and I have not even applied a crack yet,) I end up with this url throwing an error (something similar to page not found). So I'm unable to even proceed and get the KB905474 update to crack later and so.... Seems there is an error on microsoft's side (or with a higher probability, they have unloaded the pages for non-genuine people, to upload a more "strong" system - in their point of view - to stop people apply cracks.. don't know.) Has any other person faced this problem?

(RBixby on May 19, 2006 1:54 PM) Huh? You don't even have to use "KB905474" to crack Window's validation. I just did everything else described on this thread and I got my updates and I don't have any validation issues.

(colzie on May 20, 2006 11:32 AM) I have followed the instructions here but my computer keeps trying to load an update for flash player it is very annoying

(Colzie on May 20, 2006 11:36 AM) Does anyone know why my computer will not install this update even after the WGA patch has been applied??I also have the WGA icon in my system tray is that supposed to be there? All advice appreciated folks

(jonna_983 on May 23, 2006 6:05 AM) I've been using the javascript patch for about a month now but after my last update a week ago(which was ONLY 2 security updates-the latest actually)it doesn't work and flashes up the screen where i must validate my copy(and press "continue").Either for "express" or "custom".Has the MS fixed that or is there someone who is still using it and it's effective? Just to check out if the problem is on MY pc It's win XP Pro sp2 FULLY updated

(cubitus on May 23, 2006 6:10 AM) this LegitCheckControl.dll work very nice for me thx man you r da men

(Bleh on May 24, 2006 5:44 PM) installing the 1.5.530.0 legeitcheckcontrol does not allow some computers to update. there must be something missing here.. something thats been overlooked. dunno what it might be.. some just say install 1.5.530 and wal'la it works.. Ummm Nope, It dont. something new going around.

(crowd_surfer on May 24, 2006 5:57 PM) Hey, On this download that you are wanting, if you wait the 15 seconds, download it from the non-premium one, wait another 15 seconds, and select the MIDDLE download link, it should work for you guys. If you are having any problems, just email me if you want at crowdsurfer100@gmail.com because there I can attach the file to you, and it will be alot easier for most people that way.

(aydi on May 26, 2006 5:49 AM) I have downloaded and copied LegitCheckControl.dll from Windows_Genuine_Advantage_Validation__WGA__v1[1].5.530.0_Cracked but still I receive the "Genuine Windows Validation " message and con not continue update

(TELNET on May 26, 2006 6:23 AM) Yeah guys, i also downloaded the LegitCheckControl Ver 1.5.530.0. but i also get the "Genuine Windows Validation " message and can not continue update. Im running on Xp pro SP2. The fucking bastards have come up with something that dosent allow you to download bill gates shit. The fucking prick, and he wonders why he got pied.

(jonna_983 on May 26, 2006 7:00 AM) aydi R U SURE u copied it to the right folder? And replaced the old one? The folder is \windows\system32

(bog254 on May 26, 2006 2:15 PM) as of today 1.5.530.0 crack still seems to work for me. Not sure if it matters, but I still use the old javascript hack too just for the heck of it.

(aydin on May 26, 2006 3:45 PM) jonna, Yes I am sure. have downloaded this file for first time and I copied it to %windir%\system32 but there was not any old legtcheckcontrol.dll file and i copied it for first time

(EnZo on May 26, 2006 4:49 PM) Is any of this stuff any easier if you start with a fresh system?

(WTF on May 26, 2006 5:44 PM) Used 530. Not working either.

(Tom on May 26, 2006 6:18 PM) Yo, looks like people are having problems again! All you have to do it exctact the file into c:\windows\system32 the dialogue box should appear saying "Are you sure you want to replace" onviously you select "Yes" Just make sure you don't have IE open, and that you have tried updating before and that it has failed at least once. This installs the crappy .dll that you don't want, then over right it using the method above, and that should work. I tried updating while typing this, and it worked 100%. I downloaded WMP11 and DirectX, both work fine! (However, WMP11 did fail cos the software has an inbuilt thing that checks your CD key... gay)

(George Cameron on May 27, 2006 1:38 AM) i have tried all the information given above and found that all of it works but it took me a while to get round all the stuff. if anyone ever needs the LegitCheckControl.dll file email on at gers_george@hotmail.com as i no some1 who works for microsoft and will send me the files. good luck to the rest of you.

(AndyC on May 27, 2006 11:40 AM) Worked fine for me. I'm using the LegitCheckControl Ver 1.5.530.0. Make sure that you have tried to update first; (which will fail). Install the .dll and try again. Windows update will ask to verify your version of windows. Click ok and you should be able to download windows updates.

(Bobbytupper on May 27, 2006 2:00 PM) http://www.filefactory.com/get/v3/f2.php?f=a8ecb3 WORKS, UPDATING AS I WRITE THIS, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA, EXCELLENT!

(aydin on May 28, 2006 2:22 AM) worked for me eighter. winxp fresh installing solved the problem

(MeistroWunderscheisse on May 28, 2006 6:01 AM) This is actually workin! I was locked out of updating since last week. Before I was using the url-javascript-thingy, but that one maxed out. First I tried a couple of manual registry-edit/hacks but all proved to be non-succesfull. This one worked, but only AFTER I restored the backed-up registry. So maybe if for some of u its not working, u messed up the registry to much with all those other 'fixes'. Now back to updating again... Have fun and greetz, MWS

(MeistroWunderscheisse on May 28, 2006 6:15 AM) NOTE: I just noticed: on my sysytem MediaPlayer11 did *NOT* install with the "LegitCheckControl Ver 1.5.530.0". Dunno why, cos other files from update site were no problem. Anybody?

(Tom on May 28, 2006 6:50 AM) Thats because the WMP11 actually has an in-built checker, all you have to do is extract the contents of the .exe file onto desktop in a seperate folder, and install umdf.exe, wmdbexport.exe, wmfdist11.exe and wmp11.exe all seperatly, then everything works. This is the same with IE7 if you are interested. Give it a go. I'm glad everyone is using my download link, and that everyone is having success. Out. :D

(Tom on May 28, 2006 6:52 AM) Would be nice to have credit where it's due guys. :) Thanks alot. Tom

(Colzie on May 28, 2006 8:50 AM) Tom you are a star mate I have eventually got the old pooter to work.I removed the old update for framework and then did a fresh install and all seems ok now.I am sure the buggers will come up with some other cack but as of now I am sorted..... Thanks Colzie

(Joe Blow on May 28, 2006 10:53 AM) does not work since 1.5.530.0 and anybody that says it does is full of shit because the javascript crack is excatly what microsoft targeted.

(AndyC on May 28, 2006 11:41 AM) I managed to install WMP11 and IE7 ok. But I have also made another change. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\Data and delete the Data.dat file. Create a new empty Data.dat file in the same directory and set its attributes to read only and hidden. This 'modification' appears to cancel the serial number check in WMP11 and IE7. Good luck and keep up the good work! Andy

(Tom on May 28, 2006 3:22 PM) Thanks alot Colzie, and well worked out AndyC. Mate if this works, then that it amazing, no more having to download pre-cracked software from edonkey that takes ages! Nice one dude, and thanks everyone else for the comments :D Tom

(jonna_983 on May 29, 2006 4:47 AM) Ok Tom I get your point... Tommy boy you are the MASTER, you are the KING, you are the LORD of destruction!!!! I bet u are a gordeous guy, athletic, with many girls all around you all the time etc. etc. etc. You are the LEADER man!!! Is that enough credit??? :P Lol just kidding man... You saved our ass As for Joe Blow i think you are missing something here... The 1.5.530.0 dll issue is one thing and the javascript patch is another

(glock on May 29, 2006 7:39 AM) ok , I realize this has probaly been explained 400 times now but , i am trying to install wmp 11 and i keep getting athe error setup cannot continue windows genuine advantage validation setup was unable to validate that your copy of windows is valid ... please help me out i have been driving myself crazy thanks in advance

(MadMax on May 29, 2006 8:29 AM) Bobbytupper : May 27, 2006 02:00 PM http://www.filefactory.com/get/v3/f2.php?f=a8ecb3 WORKS, UPDATING AS I WRITE THIS, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA, EXCELLENT! Tried this and it worked for windows not sure about Media Player.

(Tom on May 29, 2006 3:58 PM) Lol, thanks By the way, just under 3,000 downloads from filefactory :D Internet explorer 7 needs a 700PID code, if you want one, then email me... cheers guys.

(Anthony on May 29, 2006 6:00 PM) hey guys 2 questions i tried the data.dat thing andy explained and it had no effect.. so any ideas i really want wmp11 plus, my @ key on the keyboard is set to 2 and my " key is set to my @ key how do i swap this shit??? plus i want a valid windows xp prof i payed good money man and it says after reinstalling windows today that it is not genuine? what can i do ?

(Agostino Di Pietro on May 29, 2006 10:42 PM) I download LegitCheckControl.dll and replaced the file, and I was able to download updates, BUT when I go to install them, it still recognizes the unvalidate XP. Hence it won't let me install.!! it says " . . .cannot install . . .product key used to install Windows may not be valid . . . Any advice??? to recap, I am able to download the updates, but no install them . . . Thanks in advance

(MeistroWunderscheisse on May 30, 2006 8:59 AM) Tom: You're the greatest! :-) But seriously, seems like u saved the day for all hehehe... The WMP11 was like u said no problem. Thanx for all very much indeed. But call me stupid, which .exe's I have to run exactly to get the IE7-thingy to install once unpacked? I randomly clicked a couple of em, but not sure if that actually did what's required. Of course I could click all of them without any care for what it does to my system but hey, I'dd like some more info if possible. (got addicted to MS'ses mindless-click-and-everythings-goes-auto, even if not desired hehehe. Note to myself: must try running linux more... :-) BTW AndyC's remark about replacing the data.dat file didn't do the trick. At least not on my system.

(Xerosis on May 30, 2006 6:09 PM) Exactly the same as MeistroWunderscheisse above. :D HELP please.

(muiz on May 30, 2006 8:06 PM) 1.5.532.0 is released

(Colzie on May 30, 2006 8:43 PM) Oi Muiz Linkee please

(aceedburn on May 31, 2006 4:04 AM) tom, thanx a load for the crack, works great for me...however, I understand version 1.5.532.0 is released, any updated crack for it? or is the current 1.5.530.0 good enough? thanx a heap again mate!

(colzie on May 31, 2006 4:56 AM) Hi Guys Thought I had this sorted but the bastards have released a new wga.dll 1.5.532.0 and I am getting the update problems again... Is there a new crack to combat this??

(Xerosis on May 31, 2006 5:46 AM) Can anyone give a URL for 1.5.532.0?

(SilverBullet on May 31, 2006 8:31 AM) ghost168.homeftp.net/WgaPatch905474.zip This works tried and tested on my PC.

(jdjjgfdh on May 31, 2006 9:13 AM) thanks NewGuy

(AndyA on May 31, 2006 2:07 PM) I tried that wgapatch from the ghost website, it didnt really help, i just hope it wasnt a virus :/

(DonnyBoy on May 31, 2006 2:37 PM) Hi, Tom I replaced the .dll but Still have the WGA Icon on my tray, Is there anything else I should do

(Why WGA if sooner or later it'll be cracked ? on May 31, 2006 3:06 PM) I'm getting a screen saying my copy is not legal. Is this going to prevent me from logging in to windows ?? I'm afraid from restarting the PC

(SilverBullet on May 31, 2006 4:01 PM) The link above from the ghost website is not a virus and it allows you to download windows update to remove the WGA icon and screen saying this copy is not legal do the following. create a text file and copy & paste the below into it. "%windir%\system32\wgatray.exe /u" reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon" /f del /f /q "%windir%\system32\wgatray.exe" del /f /q "%windir%\system32\dllcache\wgatray.exe" del /f /q "%windir%\system32\WGAlogon.dll" del /f /q "%windir%\system32\dllcache\WGAlogon.dll" rmdir /s /q "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ 6c4788c9549d437e76e1773a7639582a" pause Then save it and rename the text file to WGAFix.bat make sure you change the extension to .bat then save the changes and double click it. It will then remove the WGA icon and the boot up message.

(Scion on May 31, 2006 4:37 PM) Thanks silverbullet, that worked like a charm, nice and simple ;)

(Broadband internet service on Jun 1, 2006 3:26 AM) updation problem still....

(MeistroWunderscheisse on Jun 1, 2006 7:07 AM) Important to notice that LegitCheckControl Ver 1.5.530.0 dll is still working ok, but do *NOT* use Express update. Choose Custom so you can deselect the new Genuine stuff in the "Essential updates" category. This will install a range of popups stating your windows is non-genuine. If to late, fix that with system restore and reinstall the dll.

(broadband service provider on Jun 1, 2006 10:09 AM) Thanks i have been using express updates

(king pin on Jun 1, 2006 3:39 PM) thanx 4 everything but this is a funny thing 4 me.....i cant find any WGAlogon.dll , wgatray.exe or LegitCheckControl.dll in my computer.....can it be because i have my computer in swedish langu....??? plz help

(Gonzo on Jun 1, 2006 6:39 PM) does anyone know where to change the serial key for xp.... as i need to change the product key.... i already have keys to replace the one that im using... Any HELP would be much aprechated.....Thanks.

(nopulse on Jun 2, 2006 12:46 AM) I used the 1.5.530.0 dll file and now I get this page when I go to validate windows Unable to validate this copy of Windows The validation process could not be completed because the validation control is unable to read the product key stored on this computer. We are unable to verify whether this copy of Windows is genuine. Follow these steps to resolve the issue and complete the validation process 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open field, type %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\ and then press ENTER. 3. Delete the Windows Genuine Advantage folder. 4. Click here to run the validation process again.

(Dumdidum on Jun 2, 2006 8:08 AM) Thank you David Bowman for a simple and effective solution. I did a system restore before reading your notice but was afraid to use updates at all before I read your instructions. Seems to have worked very nicely. Is it possible now to get other updates besides the security updates? I am not game to try the Javascript anymore, which did work as far as showing updates when I had the WGA (before system restore)but I didn't really test it properly as there was nothing I wanted to download. Thanks to all the people here for a wealth of information on this subject.

(Rom on Jun 2, 2006 2:48 PM) how do you crack IE7?

(GustavoWar on Jun 3, 2006 2:40 AM) Remove all users permissions in the files: WGA*.dll WgaTray.exe Thx $Bill$

(PBLEE on Jun 3, 2006 4:26 AM) I have found that the reason bullets crack doesnt work sometimes is that info in the registery has been removed by people trying other cracks I found that by putting this info back bullets crack will work for most probably everyone.... This is the reason restoring back to earlier point works.... Below is the info that needs to be put back into registry for the crack to work...This gives full download capability and also no nags screens.... I added the below back to the registry after running bullets crack... Simply copy the below including "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" into notepad save as .reg file then run...Hope this helps the people having problems Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 (Jere on Jun 8, 2006 12:28 AM) Okay, to all the lamebrains who said, "Didn't work." A) Make sure you turned off your firewalls, anti-spyware gear, and script blockers (if you use Mozilla or Firefox or Opera and have a plugin for JS blocking), then make sure you are actually plugging the code into the "address bar" in Internet Explorer. I suggest IE, but it probably should work with any browser, and because this next shep will ensure success. A lot of "lamebrains" put the "crack" into search fields, rather than "address bars". I know, because I do computer tech support, and people always say, 'I typed in www.wherever.org! Now, do I click on the first or second result?' Click File>Open or 'Alt+F' then 'O'. NOW, type the text into that field. Afterwards, close all the browsers, and restart your computer in the proper way. It should work out. Also, you should probably have JS (Java Script) turned on. Check your services and check your advanced Internet options, as well, found in Internet Explorer: Tools>Internet Options>Advvanced or 'Alt+T' then 'O'. Good luck. Peace.

Toyota’s Funny Move onto Mobile Phones

Well why not, you may ask?

Accrding to an article from 2-pop eNews, Toyota will be spending more than $10 million to create and promote a comedy series designed specifically for multimedia mobile phones!

(Yes indeed, that is an "m" as in million -- remember when feature films from major motion picture studios cost that much? Probably not ...)

Designed to push the 2007 Camry, this is claimed to be "the first branded entertainment series created for the video-phone medium."

The series, called "The Pool" debuts today and is accessible to 1 million users of Sprint/Nextel video-enabled phones. Each episode is two-minutes long, and 10 episodes are planned.

In what is also believed to be a first, Toyota is also buying spots on broadcast and cable TV (including Fox, ABC and BET) that showcase the new Camry as well as promote the mobile phone comedy series. The ads and the series share some of the same cast members.

Check it out and let me know it Toyota is spending its money wisely ...

(Let's see $10 million for 10 episodes equals $1 million per episode; each episode is two minutes so the cost is $500,000/minute -- I thought only NBA basketball players worked at that level ...)

Update, Reload & Party

Folks - we are going to be relaunching our site shortly, and what this means is that there will be moments of high anxiety and major service disruptions. Well, anxiety for us at least. And I apologize in advance for service disruption.

As of now we are not going to be making any updates to the site, up until we have cut to over to the new servers, and the new look. This should take most of the afternoon, and good part of the evening. At that point, I would be ready for a stiff drink … and some fun. (Finally a chance to dress in all black!)

We have plans for that as well. We have teamed up with Sharpcast to have a little party this evening at Mighty in San Francisco. [ Yahoo Map ]The private party is sold out (so to speak.) You are welcome to join us later at 10 when the private event is over. We will have a live band and deejay music. All details on Upcoming!

Update:

Looks like most of the site is working, though there is some weird stuff, and we will be working hard to fix this. I just wanted to take a moment and give a shout out to TeamGiga: Dave, Barry, Chauncy, Ideacodes, Katie and Nitin, who worked around the clock to help me meet the launch goal. I also would like to say thanks to friends like Mike Rundle who influenced my design sensibility and to Matt Mullenweg for writing WordPress. Tina Sedonne did the most excellent illustrations. Thank you guys!

Couple of design notes:

The Tabs: You channel surf on television, and you tab browse on your Firefox/Camino/Safari and IE 7 (beta). The tabs are just a way for you to focus on the sections/categories you love the most. Don’t like VoIP, but like to keep up with Mobile, just hit the mobile tab.

Featured tab is for our top stories of the day. When you have stars like Robert Young and Wagner James Au writing, well you got too much good stuff to have just one top story. All Stories give you everything from “today” in one easy to consume page. Just want to read Katie’s stories, you can click her byline and get only her posts.

More RSS Options: You might have noticed more RSS options. You can pick and choose what you like by your interests. (Mobile, VoIP & Telecom, Connected Home, Startups, Broadband, Software 2.0, India Inc., Online Games and Featured Posts Only.) We will offer you Author-Only feeds in a few days, so stay tuned. If you want it all, there is always the GigaFEED!

GigaOM Weekly Email: In case you miss it all, we can send you a weekly email, with our recommended picks. Hope you sign-up, even though it’s old school.

Folks, I am out for now, and counting on your patience, and support. Please send us feedback using our contact form. Bugs, complaints, suggestions and how we can improve this: I am at your service. Here is to writing more good stuff!

Viacom’s Web 2.0 Strategy: Leftovers

Viacom is buying Atom Entertainment, which is like the old school YouTube (minus all the fun stuff, aka the illegal content) for about $200 million. Atom owns Atom films and Shockwave.com and a whole slew of other sites (including some gaming sites) and will become part of the MTV Networks division of Viacom. Viacom, is the very same company that lost out on MySpace and IGN, and was rumored to have balked on hefty price-tag on TheFacebook. Instead it ended up buying Xfire. Other acquisitions include IFilm, Y2M and Neopets. This seems like a “leftover strategy” to get some of the eyeball bonanza. Just like the old NBCi.

On this week's podcast, I spoke with Barry Fogarty. He's the President of Toronto-based startup Diginiche. This is a very interesting company I came across at the Canadian Venture Forum back in May, and have been wanting to pod with them ever since.

Their focus is on real time, interactive web-based collaboration. It's one of those Web 2.0-type apps that you really have to see. The best I can do is steer you to a video clip I made of a demo that Barry gave me at the Forum. You can get to the clip via my blog posting about what I saw at the Forum.

On the podcast, Barry spoke at greater length about the opportunities he's seeing in the collaboration space, and how a simple, browser-based application like his really opens up the possibilities for creative forms of online collaboration.

You can download the podcast here, as well as read more about Barry.

I should also note that my podcasts can also be accessed at the Vonosphere, a portal just launched last week for a variety of Pulvermedia content, including the Pulvermedia Podcast Network.

FYI - no podcast next week - am away on the second leg of our summer vacation. Will be back with a new pod the following week.

Astribank 32 released - 32 FXS Channel Bank

Astribank is the easy and professional way to connect Asterisk severs to the world of traditional telephony. It is a smart channel bank for an Asterisk PBX that provides 32 FXO/FXS ports, 4 input ports and 2 output ports (I/O ports are used for operating external devices via the telephone and vice versa).

Astribank-32 connects to the Asterisk server via a normal USB-2 device and does not require shutting down the machine and opening panels. Astribank-32 has an architecture that was designed for maximum ease in integration. When used with the Xorcom Rapid distribution or Xorcom TS-1 it is practially “Plug & Play”, unlike any other solution on the market.

Xorcom's driver for Astribank is now officially part of Zaptel. Digium announced the release of Zaptel 1.2.4 for Asterisk in mid-February. Among the changes and improvements, they listed the new driver for Astribank-8 (the first member of the Astribank family) and future models of Astribank.

Team Simoco Launches TETRA-G Technology

Leading radio communications company Team Simoco has announced the launch of its new TETRA-G technology, a fully TETRA-compliant, scalable architecture for IP-switched TETRA, with voice and data system integration and network management facilities built in.

The company claims that TETRA-G removes traditional scalability and cost barriers to TETRA deployment for customers deploying either single site or multisite digital radio systems. It features integrated connectivity with land-line telephony and IP network traffic, giving maximum operational flexibility.

The first TETRA-G solution, the TETRA-G Base Station, is the World's first truly scalable single-carrier TETRA solution with integral PBX teleconnect as standard. The Base Station can expand seamlessly from a single base station to a national network.

According to Team Simoco, until now it has not been cost-effective to add PBX connectivity to traditional single-carrier TETRA solutions because the costs of the required switch card are prohibitive. Furthemore, expanding beyond a single-site deployment can often mean the original hardware is rendered obsolete.

The new single-carrier TETRA-G Base Station provides a control channel and three traffic channels, and is supplied complete with a basic rate ISDN telephone interface supporting 2 concurrent telephone-to-radio calls, which can be routed via IP. The Base Station can easily be expanded as more channels are required, to support multiple carriers through the addition of further TETRA-G units.

Team Simoco managing director Mike Norfield said: "This is a key development in the digital radio market. By integrating PBX connectivity and switching into a base station unit, TETRA-G enables easy and progressive expansion from ruggedised, single-site solutions to country-wide deployments while safeguarding customers' investments at every step. It further underlines the progress we are making in developing radio communications systems that deliver total flexibility and real price / performance benefits to users."

TETRA-G system management is through a Windows XP programming package, providing a range of reporting and control options including call logging, fast database downloads and online or offline configuration changes.

The introduction of TETRA-G follows the 2005 launch of Team Simoco's Xfin technology, which converges professional radio and IP-based voice and datacomms. With Xfin, Team Simoco won the Federation of Communications Services (FCS) 2005 Gerald David OBE Award for innovation in business radio.

TETRA-G and Xfin make Team Simoco the leader in analogue and digital radio solutions which allow seamless, fully scalable expansion from one base station to complete multisite systems.

Further TETRA-G solutions will be announced through 2006 and into 2007.

Asterisk Creator Gets $13.8 million in Venture Funding

Digium, the company that spawned open source PBX and telephony software, Asterisk, has received $13.8 million in Series A funding from Boston-based telecom specialist venture fund, Matrix Partners.

Digium is the latest amongst a growing list of VoIP-related venture investments, and perhaps the most prestigious. David Skok, a general partner at Matrix Partners who won his VC stripes by backing JBoss, an early Open Source software company joins the board of the company. Digium is one of the early pioneers of the open source telecom movement.

This also marks the latest chapter in the amazing story of Digium founder Mark Spencer and by extension, the Asterisk PBX software. In 1999, Spencer started the Huntsville, Alabama-based operation with his savings and a few thousand dollars in investment from his parents.

Since then, the simple little PBX he wrote has become a rebel yell for telecom hackers, and Spencer a rock-star at VoIP conferences such as VoN. While it is not the only open source PBX, it certainly is one of the most popular.

The company turned profitable in 2002, and remains so. Digium has experienced break neck growth over past few years. Today Asterisk boasts over one million users. Nearly, 1000 copies of the software are downloaded every day. The profitable status of the company, however made me wonder why does Digium need VC dollars?

Spencer explains that the company will use these funds to expand its operations by selling a variety of Asterisk-based IP-PBX systems to small business and large corporations. In doing so, the company might end up competing with others who base their products on Asterisk. Fonality, a Los Angeles-based company, for instance sells Asterisk-based PBX systems to the very same small and medium sized businesses.

“To me, Digium has the same, perhaps even better characteristic than that of JBoss,” says Skok, “It has a highly seasoned product, market leadership, and is profitable.” And it is also one of the hottest VoIP plays around.

Skok may have scored a coup, even if it might have cost Matrix some serious dollars in terms of valuation. Digium, he says has everything to make it one of Matrix’s most successful open source companies. With many old-styled PBX phone systems being replaced by new VoIP-based systems, a low cost offering based on Asterisk can be very attractive for buyers. Fonality, for instance, has quickly garnered 10,000 users for its ultra low-cost Asterisk-based devices.

Though he only has known Spencer for a few months, Skok says his big epiphany came when he downloaded and installed Asterisk on his computer, went overseas, and plugged into his broadband connection. He was soon making calls all over the US, as if he never left his Boston office. The Asterisk became his extension, and he was hooked. “Digium is definitely in a position to become the next big open source company, behind Red Hat, JBoss and MySQL,” says Skok, clearly smitten by his latest investment.

VoIP Roundup - Wed Aug 09/06

Jeff Pulver (Pulvermedia) and Paul Kaputska have just launched Vonosphere, a website dedicated to voice- and video-on-net news. Jeff is a very proactive person who writes letters to politicians regarding issues such as net neutrality. Congrats to both of you on the new site. [via IP Inferno]

The pricey (US$350) new Mylo from Sony, like the HyunWon Boxon, is a combo consumer electronics gadget. But it actually has VoIP, in the form of Skype. [Sony via Engadget, The VoIP Weblog]

Vonage has come up with a way to offer real e-911 access to their customers. The service ties the caller's phone number with a phsyical address. [via Xchange Mag]

Cindy Waxer of TMC Net says that VoIP job opportunities abound. So, she says, forget about become a doctor or lawyer. Apparently,  the second-fastest growing occupation is in the area of network systems and data communication analysis, right through to 2014. Job numbers will increase by 55%.

VoIP in the enterprise to date relies on WANs (Wide-Area Networks), but deployment's been a headache for some network managers. That's because VoIP is a demanding application in terms of network usage and traffic patterns. [via TMC Net] An alternative is to deploy VoIP over MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) networks.

Meebo Meet My VoIPpleganger

A couple of early Friday mornings ago, something strange happened to me, just before I went to bed. Skype messaged me saying someone wanted to add me to their buddy list. Okay, that's not strange, but the person had the same initials and last name as me. Had I pressed some strange combo of ALT-keys? No, this was a real person, and they lived half-way across the world. Some sort of VoIP doppleganger - a VoIPpleganger, maybe?

Then, after a few hours of sleep, I'd barely un-hibernated my laptop when someone from the Ukraine IMed me via the Gaim text IM client, on my AIM/ICQ account. Gaim was running for one business contact, Google Talk for another, and Skype was running for the free SkypeOut within Canada and the US. Gizmo Project wasn't running, and I hadn't installed Yahoo! Messenger 8 yet. And I'd just shut down the Trillian IM client because Gaim could manage the same accounts.

The moral of the story? Arrrrrrggggghhhhh. My laptop's RAM is always maxxed out because of all these damned text/ VoIP IM clients running for different biz contacts. Are you going crazy trying, too, trying to manage a handful of software clients?

Fortunately, a number of companies are making an effort to either be compatible with other IM clients, or at least be a bridge. We've already covered a few. For example, the newest Yahoo and MSN Messengers are compatible, and Festoon Unity tries to bridge Skype + Google Talk.

Well here's another one, which bridges four different IMs. And you don't have to download anything: Meebo. Meebo, which is AJAX-powered, works in your web browser, sort of like a virtual desktop. It bridges AIM/ICQ, Jabber/ Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, and MSN Messenger IM accounts. You get little dialog windows that you can move around, and all of your contacts from all of your above-mentioned accounts sit in one handy little window, with different icons to differentiate their source IM.

Meebo Me is a separate web-based service which lets you place a chat box/ shout box on a website/ weblog, and probably aimed at the various social networks. I haven't tried it because I already have an abundance of shoutboxes on my sites.

Meebo itself doesn't handle VoIP, nor Skype or Gizmo Project clients to my knowledge. But maybe all that's coming. Although it is convenient, easy-to-use, and a good start to IM network compatibility. Enough said; go give it a try.

Google Going Back to (U) Cali

The University of California is joining Google’s book scanning project, and Google will scan several million of UC’s titles. The project is somewhat controversial, but we’re thinking if author’s and publisher’s groups were half as powerful as the RIAA or MPAA, there would be a bigger debate going on. You might remember that really indepth story in the New York Times Magazine a while back, which lays out the debate nicely.

Google Talks Mylo

Sony’s new communicator device Mylo has a new friend - Google Talk. Mary Himinkool of GTalk team says that Sony Mylo will have built in support for Google Talk. Sure it has a small user base compared to the incumbents, but I am beginning to like the federated/multi device approach Google is taking. Here is a tip guys: How about a $25,000 bounty for anyone who creates a Google Talk client (with Voice support) for say a Symbian or any other mobile platform. That should get some people GTalking!

Is SIP The Building Block For IP Telephony Features?

Many people think that the SIP-based technology will be the core building block for future enterprise IP telephony networks, especially for call control protocols and offering features for VoIP that are already present in existing telephony systems.

SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol, is an IETF proposed standard to manage online multimedia sessions that include video, voice, IM, and more. As such, there is expected to be strong interest in the SIP market in the near future. [via CNS Magazine] Light Reading has published a new report studying the SIP market  (US$900).

Yahoo Still #1, MySpace Close Behind

Yahoo was right to get flustered when MySpace was declared the Net’s new #1. But if MySpace keeps growing at its current rate, Yahoo might have to face the music soon enough. ComScore’s July numbers are out and UBS takes a look: Yahoo is still the top site for page views and unique vistors, though MySpace is battling for a close #2 for total page views.

Yahoo sites had 37.7 billion page views for July, down 5% from the previous month and down 8% from the previous year. MySpace had 30.9 billion page views and grew 2% from the previous month and a massive 233% from the previous year. (Update: We used million instead of billion pageviews. Sorry about that.)

UBS says Yahoo’s drop is in part due to “summer softness” but let’s say if Yahoo dropped 5% every month and MySpace grew 2% every month, it would only be sometime later this year before MySpace actually does surpass Yahoo in terms of page views. Not that this downward trend is going to continue for Yahoo! Also, how come there was no summer softness at MySpace or Google?

Google still grew pretty fast, with 10.3 billion page views in July, up 1% from the month earlier and 69% up from the year before. And grew well on unique visitors too, with 103.9 million uniques, up 1% from the month before, and 26% from the year prior.

Citron’s Buyback Moment

Jeffery Citron must think that Vonage (VG) is a buy. He is spending $1.26 million of his own money to buy shares in his company. The New York Post reports that he bought shares on August 4 at $6.41 to $6.90 a share. As we all know how poorly the company stock has done since its IPO a few months ago, this would seem like a confidence inspiring move. Or is there something else?

Q&A With Asterisk Creator, Mark Spencer

Mark Spencer who started Digium and wrote the Asterisk PBX software is one of the true pioneers of the post-PSTN era. Asterisk, an open source PBX/telephony platform has a million users worldwide and it is downloaded about 1000 times a day.

Asterisk is to telephony what Linux is to the web world – a platform that can truly cause long term change in the telecom/technology industry. In a brief phone chat, he explains what folks are doing with Asterisk, and other challenges that face the Web-VoIP mash-up.

Q: Why do you think Asterisk has become so popular even though there are many other open source PBX products?

A: One of the reasons is clearly because it has been around since 1999, and also the fact that it comes from a very pragmatic heritage. It is a product that addresses the real world, and is more inclusive in nature. It is not built around the academic ideas of features. Just because SIP is hot, doesn’t mean we can ignore the H.323 and TDM users. In the end we built a single platform that is very flexible.

Q: Explain, what you mean by flexible.

A: It can be used for anything from small business to large companies or even carriers. People are using it for phone-based pod casting. Spark Parking is using it for auto parking applications, while some students at NYU have come up with a VoIP-based blogging tool.

Q: One of my biggest complaints is that the IP telephony crowd and the Web application crowd don’t talk to each other much. Sure there are some applications that have come out lately, but the marriage of IP voice and web apps is still pretty rocky.

A: Yes that is true. At VoN we are rock stars because we are open source, but at Linux World, people don’t get as excited about VoIP. I think that is something we need to proactively address. We are making it easier for web developers to write for Asterisk. We have introduced AJI, which is like CGI for the Asterisk. That should help.

Q: Lastly, how would you describe yourself as a programmer?

A: People have this wrong notion that I am a good programmer. I am actually a lazy programmer; that is why I kept Asterisk so simple.

Your VoIP Sucks!

Thats right, your VoIP Service Sucks! Here that Service Providers? Your Service Sucks. Here are a few recent examples of what I am talking about: Study Finds Substantial Drop In Call Quality Over the Last 2 Years Website Devoted to VoIP Sucking Even VoIP Sucks to Some People Random Forum Posting About How Much VoIP Sucks Lingos CNet.com Rating Here is some advice : Rather then continuously lower your pricing, why not raise your price $10-$15 and have the HIGHEST quality VoIP service on the market. Use these extra profits to continue to make your service quality the best there is. > You should end up with a service of similar quality to the PSTN and a price point still lower then the average monthly rate todays consumer is paying for their PSTN line. (You may even make a profit!) > It is not that simple, but it is . The second wave of VoIP adoptors are increasingly sensative to the quality of their calls (as evident by the number of VoIP Sucks posts you will find.). These consumers are not techies, first adaptors, or even those who need to save money on their phone bill. These are the band of consumers that will pay a premium for higher quality. Low cost might have worked for the early adoptors who abosolutely needed the technology, but this new wave of consumers have and will continue to be sensative to VoIP quality because they do not need the technology; they already have a phone that works. Unless service providers wake up, and work to provide the service quality that they want, the mass market will be slow to see a need for VoIP. > Lingo , VoIP , VoIP Quality , VoIP Service , VoIP Service Provider , VoIP Sucks

Sprint Wi-Max Plan: Who Wins, Who Loses

So here are the facts: Sprint Nextel plans to spend as much as $3-billion over the next two years to build a nation-wide Wi-Max network. From initial indications, the "winners" will be
- Intel, which is pimping the flavour of Wi-Max being used by Sprint;
- Motorola and Samsung, which were selected to supply technology;
- and consumers, who will have another option for broadband to access voice, video and data services.
The loser is Qualcomm and the CDMA standard that has been its cash-cow in recent years. As well, Craig McCaw's Clearwire, which will have another rival in the Wi-Max market. Oddly enough, Clearwire just raised $900-million from Intel Capital and Motorola so perhaps they're looking to hedge their bets, or just happy to suppiler equipment to whoever wants it. One more thought: Is it just me or does this aggressive infrastructure spending feel is a little like the telecom boom? Back then, it was fiber-optic networks to provide broadband service. Now, it's high-speed wireless networks to offer broadband service. What's the difference other than there are fewer "CLECs" in the game?
For more views, check out Joseph Laszlo, who balks at Sprint's insistence on using the terms "4G", Phonescoop, GigaOm and dailywireless.org.
Update: As one of the people who made a comment pointed out, Sprint's Wi-Max strategy could give Rogers and Bell Canada some ammunition to ramp up marketing for their Inukshuk joint venture, which launched Wi-Max service earlier this year. I suspect part of their cautiousness has been the desire to work out any bugs and wait for user-friendly technology such as laptop modems that incorporate Wi-Max and Wi-Fi.

Redback’s Aggressive Growth Plans

The telecom equipment market is under siege - at least in this part of the world where Nortel is trying to slowly restructuring itself back to health. So it is seems, well, strange to hear Redback Networks's ambitious plans to double its workforce to 1,200 from 600 over the next year. In an interview, Mimi Gigoux, who heads up worldwide human resources for Redback, said the company is looking to hire in Canada and the U.S., rather than going off-shore to low-cost regions such as China and India. So what's behind the bullish hiring plans? Redback believes the "explosion" of Web-based services such as IP-TV, VOD and VoIP means huge demand for its edge-routers - a market where the competition includes heavyweights such as Cisco, Juniper and Alcatel. An interesting comment by Redback is their belief the telecolm equipment market is dividing itself between the large players, who are becoming system integrators, and smaller, niche players focused on specific types of technologies. Investors appear to have not picked up on Redback's optimism as the stock has dropped 40% in the past three months.
Update: Speaking of bullish, Cisco CEO John Chambers provided an enthusiastic outlook for the company's fiscal 2007 prospects yesterday with an expectation of 15% to 20% revenue growth. "We are gaining market share against nearly all our peers in the service provider segment," he said during a conference call after Cisco posted better than expected fiscal fourth-quarter results.

How big is the Blogosphere really?

Dave Sifry’s State of The Blogosphere report has a much talked about event, one that generates maximum impact in the blogosphere, not to mention the generous link love. So much so, Sifry, CEO of San Francisco-based Technorati, a blog search company, has become synonymous with the rapid growth of the blog phenomenon.

In his latest missive he says there are 50 million blogs, which can make you go … realllllyyyyy! Well, Kevin Burton isn’t buying it, and he did number crunching of his own, using Sifry’s data and came to a different conclusion: the blogosphere isn’t growing as fast as Sifry suggests.

There might have been 50 million blogs that have ever been created but there aren’t 50 million blogs in active use.

Technorati says that there are 1.6 million postings per day, and with 50 million blogs out there, it works out to about 0.032 posts per blog per day. To Kevin it seems that there are a lot of inactive blogs out there.

I just checked the numbers for the April 2006 report: 35.3 million blogs and 1.2 million blog postings. That works out to about 0.034 posts per blog per day. Between the April and July reports, the blog posts per day are up 33%, while the total number of blogs are up 41.6%. Kevin might have a point when he writes: “number of active blogs is on a linear growth scale not an exponential scale… and Technorati has a high number of inactive weblogs in their index.”

I would let Kevin, dave and others debate this issue. But while you are at it, please do read the lively debate currently underway at Kevin’s blog.

LogMeIn Buys Hamachi

So the rumors were true! As reported earlier this week by us, P2P based VPN provider, Hamachi has been snapped up by LogMeIn, a Woburn, Mass.-based remote connectivity company. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hamachi has about three million beta users, and the company claims it is adding 400,000 computers a month. Wow, those are Skype like numbers. We are pretty sure they did not get Skype-like dollars. Our review should explain why people love the product. User beware, says our good friend, Ken Camp.

…the technical side of this service establishes a VPN tunnal via a gateway server on Cocos Island. If this service were to ever embrace port hopping technology like Skype-uses, you’d have a peer to peer link established from your corporate network to foreign soil. This is problematic for many businesses…

Given that LogMeIn.com is in the business of selling to large corporations, they are going to do the right thing, and make the service corporate-happy.
