Sprint “together with Nextel?” No, not quite

Note: I orginally posted this last night on BBHub, my BlackBerry blog. But after looking over that post a few times, I thought it would apply here as well. Had an interesting experience today going into a "Sprint" store and trying to get my notebook updated for EV-DO. They were out of [...]

Vonage V-Phone: why bother?

I've been doing some back-of-the-napkin number crunching about whether or not it makes business sense to buy a Vonage V-Phone. That's the much-ballyhooed, soon-to-be-much woo-hoo-hoo'd, memory-stick type device that Vonage is debuting today. You pay $40 list, or less via promotions, and you get a gizmo pre-configured with Vonage software. When you   [...]

EA Moves into MMORPGs in Big Way

Video game goliath Electronic Arts has recently announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Mythic Entertainment, which vaults it into developing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs).

Mythic is recognized worldwide for revolutionizing the online gaming space with the awardwinning Dark Age of Camelot (pictured) and is currently developing Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning under a license agreement with Games Workshop.

The net net: The growing importance of online gaming as a revenue-producing space, as more and more companies look to monetize the Internet.

Is that a good thing?

Comcast buys ThePlatform

Comcast Interactive, a division of Comcast, has snapped up ThePlatform, a digital media services company based in Seattle, according to sources close to the company. While I was typing this up, PaidContent published the details of the deal.

The purchase price is pegged at between $70 to $80 million and the company will likely continue working with existing clients such as Verizon’s VCast and Scripps. The six-year-old company had raised about $8 million from Spark Capital. I guess, Comcast is getting serious about this whole digital media thing and is trying to develop some more Internet properties for its broadband users.

Digital Foci’s Memory Card Travel Case: Good Idea!

Even if you don't do too much traveling, this a must-have digital camera accessory!

(Works with other gadgets, too.)

Digital Foci's Memory Card Travel Case organizes and protect your valuable flash memory cards with smart stackable slots that let you hold as many as eight memory cards of all different types: CompactFlash I/II, MD, SM, MMC, SD, miniSD, MS, MS Prod, MS Duo and xD card.

(Do we really need all of these formats?)

The combination of the brushed aluminum casing and the molded hard rubber lining (that keeps the cards from sliding around once they're inside the case) provides maximum protection.

(And yes, I have dropped this case to test that the cards are actually protected ...)

Besides protecting your memory cards from damage, the case also helps protect you from misplacing or losing memory cards (pretty easy when they are all so small and in all sizes and shapes of cases).

Price: $19.95

Your Call is Important To Us - Please Stay Awake

Very embarassing for Comcast, particularly if this happens to a blogger:

Two weeks ago, a Comcast repairman in Washington fell asleep in a customer's home. The customer, Brian Finkelstein, a student at Georgetown Law School, took the incident to the Internet. He shot a video of the repairman sacked out in his couch and posted it on his blog, Snakes on a Blog. The video, which he also posted on YouTube, is one of several recent examples of angered customers taping their interactions with customer service, then putting the experience online ...

VoIP Peering in a Box

Courtesy enum.at, for free use by VoIP service providers, helpless incumbents and others, a "VoIP peering in a box border element" is made publicly available here.

The peering proxy is unique because it supports different TLS connections featuring different certificates dependant on the destination. In addition, it supports Infrastructure ENUM as defined in draft-haberler-carrier-enum-03.txt and draft-lendl-enum-branch-location-record-02.txt and also the Domain Policy Matching module as defined in draft-lendl-speermint-federations-01.txt and draft-lendl-domain-policy-ddds-01.txt.

In addition, you find there also other documents: registry specifications for User and Infrastructure ENUM, regsistrar manual, client toolkits, etc.

Google and MySpace: Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda!!

By Robert Young

In the latest (July) issue of Wired magazine, Rupert Murdoch claims that Google…

“…could have bought MySpace three months before we did for half the price. They thought, ‘It’s nothing special. We can do that.’”

So that means Google could have acquired MySpace a year ago for about $290 million. Talk about a strategic blunder… the thought of Google and MySpace, combined, boggles the mind. Instead, Google is left thinking of what could have been. And to add insult to injury, it may turn out that not acquiring MySpace may end up being more expensive for Google!

As widely reported, MySpace is now the largest source of search traffic for Google, accounting for over 8% of their inbound traffic as of early May. That essentially means that MySpace is responsible for about $400 million of Google’s annual revenues. Knowing this, MySpace is trying to capitalize by holding an auction for its search business. If Google wins, it will end up sharing a significant percentage of that $400 million with MySpace… John Battelle thinks the split to MySpace will be close to 90%. And Google would need to pay it every year. Needless to say, had Google acquired MySpace, no such payments would have to be made.

In addition to the real costs that Google is likely to incur, there’s also the opportunity cost. Had Google acquired MySpace, they would likely be ranked the #1 Internet property on all user & usage metrics… nudging out Yahoo! from that top spot. It certainly would have been quite a sight to see… being #1 overall, based on its dominance in search fortified with an even greater dominance in the social networking category. It certainly would have cemented Google’s leadership into a near-ineffable state of invincibility.

Having said all that, I personally believe it would be foolish for Google to pay MySpace anything. Even if MySpace strikes a deal with a competitive search engine, it’s highly likely that the users will simply bypass the default and go to Google anyway.

Robert Young is a serial entrepreneur who played a major role in the invention & commercialization of the world’s first consumer ISP, Internet advertising (pay-per-click ads), free email, and digital media superdistribution.

Sox-Mets - World Series Preview?/1986 Revisited

Only in Boston do they celebrate losers! I'm not sure if this is pathetic, or the mark of a great sports town with a sense of history. The answer is obvious to me, and believe me, they wouldn't be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Series if they hadn't won in 2004. That would be really sad.

All I can say is that if it goes well, I have no doubt next year will be the 40th anniversary of the 1967 "Impossible Dream" Red Sox, who lost heroically to the Bob Gibson Cardinals, of course, in 7. The Sox always lose in 7! I remember it like it was yesterday, as do millions of Nation followers, and if the Cardinals are slated for an interleague visit next year, it sure would be fun to see the likes of Yaz and Gibson again. I digress, but in a nice way....

So, tonight - weather permitting - interleague play continues, and the Red Sox host the Mets. Normally this wouldn't merit a blog post, but the stars have lined up to make this a special event. At this point in the season, these are arguably the two best teams in baseball, and I think there's a pretty strong chance they will meet again in October.

With all this good karma happening, it's no surprise the Red Sox are making a big deal about the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Series, which does not bear repeating here. But in case you need to know, I'll reprise the box scores, and you can draw your own joyous or painful conclusions...

1986 Mets_Sox boxscores.bmp

Perhaps things will be differnet this year - the season is barely halfway over - lots can and will happen. If you thought Johnny Damon's return to Fenway was fun, I can't wait to see how things go on Wednesday when Pedro makes his return, squaring off against Beckett.

I'm going to close out with two short references to 1986. It's hard not to get pulled back to this today, so this is a form of catharsis to get it out of my system. Then I can serenely return to the 21st Century and think about what today's heroes - Papi, Manny, Papelbon - might do in this series.

First, an anecdote. I watched Game 7 of that series at a friend's house. I lived in an apartment building then (in Toronto), and after parking my car in the garage (following a very quiet, pondering drive home), I get on the elevator up to my floor. I'm joined by someone else, who I recognized as a neighbor on my floor. Yeesh - I remembered, he was from Boston too, and we both had this sullen, hollowed-out look of defeat. It was obvious we had both come home from watching the game, and never raised our heads to make eye contact. Just stared blankly at the floor - WE KNEW - there was nothing to say, just silent suffering. Never saw him again...

On a visual note, Jeff Pulver's office is quite a site. Amidst all the rock momentos, cool posters, gadgets and knick knacks, this sits quietly in the corner, propped up against the window...

Oh, cruel ye gods. Captured at the moment of humility, the Buckner Incident that in an instant tore the heart out of New England, because we knew then and there that victory had been snatched away again by the baseball gods. There was a lot more baseball to be played before the series was over, but you just knew then it was over.

Not only is this picture a painful reminder, but it's autographed by both Buckner and Mookie!!!!! It's hard to see from the photo, but it's there. Jeff is a lucky guy to have this, and I hope he enjoys it. I could never do the same. Mind you, I need to be nice to Jeff because he has Mets tickets! If our teams meet again in October, I'll make sure to let him know that if he needs company, I'm there.....

RIM Goes 3G

RIM, the makers of the highly addictive Blackberry device has gone 3G. The company today launched 8707, a version of its very popular 8700 series device in Ireland that runs on Vodafone’s UMTS Network. RIM claims it can be used as a broadband modem that can be connected to the laptops.

RIM needed to make this move since a whole slew of new devices that utilize the 3G networks are hitting the stores in Europe. One challenger is Nokia E61 which frankly is one of the best since it can do plain vanilla email, Exchange Mail (without blackberry) and Blackberry EMail. (In fact, I ended up buying one on my London trip.) It also is 3G ready and has WiFi. 8707 seems to be a pretty good device, and can help fight off the new 3G ready challengers.

Intel sells XScale processor to Maxell

XScale Processor Marvell Technology Group has acquired Intel's XScale processor division. As a gadget-lover this is absolutely shocking since the Intel XScale chips are used in PocketPCs, handhelds, mobile phones and other embedded devices and gadgets. The popular Treo and Blackberry devices also use the XScale chipset.

Intel has been one of the leading innovators of providing  low-power consumption chipsets, continually pushing the edge of battery life and performance in small embedded devices. Intel has one of the largest R&D budgets in the IT world and some of the most sophisticated labs. Intel selling the XScale processor division for $600 million will certainly give Intel a much-needed cash boost, but they may have just mortgaged their future earnings. Both the Blackberry and Treo have been a resounding success. Certainly Windows Mobile 5 smartphones like the Motorola Q are also selling. So why Intel would abandon a growing market seems a bit odd. Marvell also will acquire the 1,400 people currently employed by Intel and they state they will retain most of these employees.

I hope Marvell continue to improve the XScale processor and will dedicate plenty of R&D dollars to that end. Perhaps Marvell will do even better than Intel in improving the performance specs on the XScale chipset. Only time will tell.

JAHJAH offers free calls globally

JAJAH today announced free phone-to-phone calls to almost anywhere. The JAJAH Free Global Calling Plan applies to both landline and mobile phones to many of the most-called places in the world.

JAHJAH uses a unique method of initiating the call. You go to a website, enter in your phone number and the number you wish to dial and JAHJAH dials both legs of the call and connects the two. I believe once you register on their site, it remembers your phone number, so you may not have to enter your phone number unless you are on the road or at a different phone, but I will have to test JAHJAH myself to confirm.

The JAJAH Free Global Calling Plan applies to land line and mobile calls to and within: the United States; Canada; China; Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.  The plan also applies to landline calls to and within: Australia; UK; Germany; France, Italy and most other European nations.

There is a slight catch though. JAJAH’s Free Global Calling Plan applies only when both call participants are registered JAJAH users.  But hey, if you can make free calls to friends, family, etc. why not have them register? In countries where free phone calls are not available, or if someone is calling a non-JAJAH member, calls are then subject to JAJAH’s rates, usually less than 3 cents a minute. Registration is free, and no pre-payment is required.

I found this tidbit from JAHJAH quite interesting where they are relying on user's "honesty" to not abuse their free phone service:

In place of complicated user agreements, JAJAH has created a system that depends on the JAJAH community adhering to a “fair use” policy, which simply asks people to try to keep their calls within a reasonable amount of minutes.  To this end, JAJAH will monitor the number of hours per individual user per day to assure that no single person damages the overall service.

Of course, it is obvious this is a bit of a marketing gimmick to get users to try and use their service and hope their service have some "stickiness" that keeps customers using their service. Still, free calls using your regular phone is great - assuming you have a web browser handy.

So where's the business-model you ask? Well, according to JAHJAH, they are counting on the community to use other paid services as well to help make this program work. Jajah believes they can "earn" money by providing added value services that the community finds useful and are willing to pay for. Other services like the occasional scheduled call and text messaging, for example, will help Jajah pay the bills. Although I am not sure how scheduled calls and text messaging is enough to offset the costs of free calls being terminated by JAHJAH. Perhaps they have some other paid applications they neglected to tell me about. Surprised they don't inject a 15 second audio ad before getting the call or something.

Nortel Slashing 1,100 Jobs

Surprise, surprise (well, not really), Nortel is cutting 1,100 jobs and reviewing its pension plan. The jobs cuts will reduce annual operating expenses by $100-million in 2007 and $175-million in 2008. The company also unveiled changes to its pension plan from defined benefits to defined contributions contributions to  defined benefits, which will save Nortel about $100-million a year. And everyone wondered why Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski is so bullish about the company's prospects.

Citron’s Losing His Marketing Mojo

Vonage's post-IPO troubles must be weighing heavily on the shoulders of chairman and co-founder Jeff Citron. For the second time in two weeks, he gave a keynote at a conference that lacked any kind of sizzle. Brian Ward said Citron's speech at Convergence 2.0 failed to address any of the issues facing Vonage these days (growing criticism about its marketing spending, class-action lawsuits, discounts for subscribers who threaten to leave, etc.). With Vonage under siege, this is a time when you'd expect a marketing-wizard such as Citron to creatively and enthusiastically come to the company's defense. After all, he co-founded Vonage because he believed VoIP would be a disruptive technology. What happened to that chutzpah? Now that Vonage is public, itseems like Citron believes he has to behave. But if all you're going to do is give tepid keynotes with no meat, why bother talking at all because you end up doing more harm than good? One other thing, Citron declined to answer questions after his keynote. Strange because it's not like he's not good at avoiding questions he can't answer.
